Choosing a Professional when it matters most !!

8/7/2023 (Permalink)

A water damage restoration service is the kind of professional that no one wants to call, but when they are needed, it is important not to delay. Homeowners know that moisture is often the enemy, capable of penetrating into just about any space, and taking advantage of every little crack and structural problem. No matter how moisture gets into the building, the response should be the same. Bring in a certified firm like SERVPRO® as soon as possible to clean the home, dry it, and ensure there are no lingering health threats once the moisture is gone.

If water has entered the home through a contaminated source, don’t try to handle it on your own. Floods and sewage backflows contain a cocktail of deadly bacteria, viruses and fungi, and even momentary skin contact can leave a person seriously ill. SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale not only has the tools to eliminate the moisture, they have the protective equipment to remain free from harm.

SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale restoration technicians have a lot of technology at their disposal. These include powerful vacuums and pumping systems, high volume air movers, dehumidifiers, heat injectors, moisture meters, and a number of detergents formulated for destroying fungi and other microbial threats. While the technicians work on the building, disposing of compromised materials, and drying the rest, they will also destroy all mold and microbial colonies. This is the only way to ensure your home or commercial property is safe to live; any other cleaning method is a dangerous gamble.

Home Fireplace Cautions

7/19/2023 (Permalink)

A fireplace in the winter time can be mesmerizing. We picture a roaring fire, providing warmth from the cold outside. Preparing for a family gathering, or just time to cozy up to read a good book with something warm to drink. Well, like most things we look forward to, it takes some planning and preparation right?

So let me switch gears a little. Did you know that 1 in 10 home fires start as a  result of a fireplace? Here at SERVPRO® we've unfortunately seen our share of families dealing with the aftermath of a fire in their home and helped them get back on their feet. It's what we do.

This blog is not to deter you from enjoying your fireplace, but rather to inform you of some things you can do to take some precautions when it comes to using your fireplace. The EPA recommends that a fireplace be inspected annually by a professional. Missing bricks or cracks in the mortar can allow smoke to vent into your home. Wood is the fuel for your fire. When wood burns it releases toxins in the process, one of which is Carbon Monoxide. It is odorless and colorless and is referred to as “The Silent Killer”. So make sure your home's carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. Opening a window even slightly, can help vent as well.

Try to use wood that is properly dried out, not damp. Freshly cut wood is damp inside and will smoke more. Dried wood will burn hotter and with less smoke.

Use a grate or screen to keep embers where they belong. Never leave a fire unattended. We've all started the fire in advance of a family gathering before guests arrive, but then went back to the kitchen to cook the meal. You should wait till guests arrive. Then you can show off your mad skills at building a proper fire. And it's best to never let the fire go on through the night. 51% of all deaths . resulting from a fire, happens at night between 11PM and 7AM while we are sleeping.

So go ahead and enjoy your fireplace… just do it safely.

Tornado Safety Tips

7/14/2023 (Permalink)

Big summer storms can sometimes lead to scary situations. Perhaps none bigger than the threat of a Tornado. Years ago, we never received advanced warning. Today the meteorologists have access to so much new technology, that they understand these storm systems and can predict when and where the biggest threats are. We can get Alerts right to our cell phones or across our televisions. It should give you “Peace of Mind”… IF you heed their advice!!

You've heard for years to keep an Emergency Kit/Supplies somewhere just in case. Water, batteries, dry food goods. It's too late once you get a warning of a potential Tornado in your vicinity. Also there is a difference between a “Watch” and a “Warning”.

-Tornado Watch - Conditions in the atmosphere are right for one to potentially develop. Be Prepared. Charge your cell phones.

   - Tornado Warning - Radars have picked up Stronger winds with Rotation and Debris heading in your general direction. Take cover, follow your plan.

If you have a basement, you should head there. If not, it should be a room in the center of your home, preferably with no windows. A bathroom with no windows is better. The walls of your bathroom contain the plumbing pipes so it will usually be structurally stronger. Lets hope you never experience this kind of storm, but being Prepared is worth doing. But if you do, call SERVPRO® to help you through this recovery.

7/14/2023 (Permalink)

One of the most important financial decisions we make in our lives is the home we live in. Followed by our car. But our home is so much a part of our lives. We pay insurance to protect that investment should it get damaged. And if it does, we want it repaired like it was before, right?  It's important.

Important Steps After Your Fire

7/11/2023 (Permalink)

The first 48 hours after you experience a fire in your home can make the difference between potentially Restoring, versus needing to Replace your belongings. They are important to you. The overwhelming emotions can range from Fear, Stress, Uncertainty and Doubt and typically will last long after the Flames and Smoke are gone.

Where do you start? Who do you depend on to help you put things right again? The fire lasted a couple hours but the process to get your home back to Pre-Fire Loss will take time. Weeks and probably longer depending on the amount of damage that occurred.

Time to take a deep breath and focus on the start of this process. A little at a time, you'll get there. Answer the “Whos Gonna Help You” question 1st.

SERVPRO® has been an Industry Leader in the Restoration business for over 55 years. It has earned us the reputation as a company that cares, and is a Preferred National Vendor with most of the large Insurance carriers. That's who you should want to help you put things back together. Moldy Musty Smells

7/10/2023 (Permalink)

If you encounter these smells in your home or business you should look into it further. You probably have wet conditions somewhere that are creating an unhealthy situation for those in the environment. Organic materials found inside your building such as Wood, Paper, Drywall and Insulation to name a few, provide food sources for the mold to grow and multiply. If it goes unchecked and not addressed it will only get worse.

The moisture causing this, can come from a leaky pipe or damp basement. Even if you have a sump pump down there. Make sure it doesn't have any standing water in the basin. If you use a Dehumidifier keep it clean so it's not a contributing factor. When your heating or Air conditioning system comes on the fans are pushing these smells and spores into other areas. Try to change the air filters regularly and use a HEPA filter to better trap some of the mold.

Mold can cause Allergic reactions such as Sneezing, Itchy Eyes, a Runny Nose and is very tough for those with Respiratory issues or Asthma. It's important enough that you should contact a professional to take a look and test, and Remediate this issue. At SERVPRO® that's what we do. Industry Leaders for over 55 years, helping people like yourself. With over 2,000 locations in the US alone we are nearby and ready to help you, available 24/7.

Storm Preparedness - Being Proactive

7/7/2023 (Permalink)

Bad weather can spring up at any time, especially here in Michigan. Most of the time when a large thunderstorm “Rumbles” thru here locally, we have little time to react.

As a homeowner it's important for you to have a Preparedness Plan in place. Some very easy steps are:

  • Having a case of water set aside
  • Dry goods/food/snacks to eat
  • Batteries for flashlights in the case you lose power
  • Car plug adapter to charge your cell phone

Simple stuff right?

Next, you should keep a plastic tarp somewhere handy in case you need to cover something up, like a hole in your roof from tree damage caused by the strong winds. Tarps are pretty inexpensive and when folded up, take very little space to store, but can save your home from worse water damage.

Now, a simple call to your Insurance Agent to confirm the type of coverage you have for storms. Flood coverage? Sewage back-up? These are typically different coverages. Verify this information and make adjustments you feel you need for your peace of mind. Once the storm is here… it's too late.

If you do suffer Storm Damage, file the Claim right away to get things rolling. Then call SERVPRO. We are an Industry Leader in Storm Restoration along with Fire and Mold. With over 2,000 locations we are always ready to assist you 24/7 and are an Approved Preferred Vendor for most of the National Insurance Carriers. Still Pretty Simple, Right?

Acting Quickly For Your Fire Loss

7/6/2023 (Permalink)

If you experience the unfortunate event of a fire in your home, there are some helpful things you should know. You're probably going to want to start the cleaning process on your own. It's a natural reaction.

However, the cleaning process should really be done by a Professional Restoration company trained in dealing with Fire/Smoke damage. The process to get your home back to its Pre-Fire condition requires specific cleaning agents and technical knowledge depending on what type of fire you experienced.

Keep in mind that a fire (even a small one) typically fills your entire home with smoke in just 5 minutes. The first 48 hours after a fire loss are important and can be the difference between a Restoration versus a costly Replacement of your home's contents. With that in mind…

  • Limit movement through your house as you'll be spreading the soot particles further.
  • You can put clean towels or linens down in high traffic areas or on rugs as temporary help.
  • Do Not wash the walls or painted surfaces. These require specific cleaning agents
  • Do Not shampoo any carpets or upholstery. They require cleaning agents and methods that will release these soot particles. Otherwise you may set the smoke and smell in permanently requiring replacement.

Let SERVPRO® and their 50 plus years of experience as a Leader in the Restoration Industry do it for you. It's part of our core business.

Storm Damage

7/5/2023 (Permalink)

Storm damage can come in many different forms and affect your home in different ways as well. Did your flooded street back up into the sewer system in your neighborhood? Did storm winds bring down a tree or large limbs, damaging your roof or taking down electrical lines? No electricity…means no sump pump to push unwanted water or sewage back outside. Roof damage means the rain is probably finding its way into your house from above. Any water damage is bad news.

If you're thinking you'll use towels and a mop, it's a good first step, but not enough. You're not getting to the water you can't see, but it's still there. Does it contain bacteria? Will these hidden wet areas become Mold? Don't take that risk. Call SERVPRO®.

Our experienced technicians will use their Advanced Industry approved equipment to extract the water and locate the hidden wet areas with moisture detection devices. Well dry it out properly and thoroughly so you can get back to your daily routine faster and with Peace of Mind. SERVPRO works directly with your insurance claims adjuster on your behalf. One less thing you need to worry about. We are available 24/7.

The SERVPRO of Oak Park/ Ferndale Team is always here to help in your time of need.

WATER DAMAGE

7/3/2023 (Permalink)

Water Damage in your home or commercial business can happen at any time. It can be the result of many different causes some of which are:

  • A failure of a water heater
  • Broken water pipes
  • Slow leaks from your sink, bathtub, or shower drain.
  • A leaky roof
  • Sewer back up

Leaking water will travel the “path of least resistance”. Typically moving inside your walls, under the flooring and to lower levels. If you find or suspect these issues, react quickly. Call SERVPRO®.

Water damage not addressed can lead to potential structural issues but can and usually leads to Mold. Structural issues can cost you more money later and Mold is just plain Unhealthy. It's not just the bad smell, but breathing in this mold over time can lead to medical concerns for all ages. Don't let that happen. Call SERVPRO - We are an Industry Leader for a reason. With more than 50 years of experience servicing people like yourself, over 2,000 locations and 24/7 availability we stand ready to help. Industry leading technology, equipment and relationships with the leading Insurance Carriers as a National Preferred Vendor working for their clients needs. That means you!!!

Interesting 4th of July Holiday Facts

First off, remember to be safe this holiday. It’s estimated that approximately 16,000 people were admitted to hospitals as a direct result of fireworks. You should always have a water supply handy if you're using fireworks and keep children a safe distance away from the fireworks. Be aware of the direction you are shooting them. Avoid them from landing on any homes and starting fires.

And now, on the lighter side….

  • Massachusetts was the 1st state to make it an Official State Holiday.
  • It became a Federal Holiday in 1870.
  • (3) Past Presidents died on the 4th of July and (1) was born on that date.
  • There have been 27 versions of the Flag from the original13 stars and 13 stripes, which represented the founding 13 colonies.
  • Today's version has 50 stars ( 1 for each state) but still just 13 stripes.
  • The last star was added in 1960 when Hawaii was admitted to the union.
  • Proper folding of the Flag is a Triangle, which replicates the Tri-Cornered hat that the Continental Army soldiers wore during the Revolutionary War.
  • The original Liberty Bell in Philadelphia hasn't been rung since 1846, when a major crack appeared. Instead it is tapped 13 times.
  • The New World Trade Center in New York was designed to be 1,776 feet tall, representing the year America declared their Independence from Great Britain.
  • Americans consume an estimated 150 million hot dogs on this holiday.

Hope you enjoyed these tidbits of information. Have a Great and Safe 4th of July Holiday from the SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale Team.

Summer Storm Tips

6/15/2023 (Permalink)

Tips To Help Avoid Summer Storm Damage

Most of us think we are prepared for Emergency situations, until they regrettably happen. Then it's time to call SERVPRO. We’ll get you through it!

 However, there are some things you can add to your “I’m prepared” list to help avoid these storm issues. Two big items for your list are;

1) Clean out your gutters every spring from the Fall leaves

2) Check your basement Sump Pump

And here's why !!

Heavy rains in a big storm, flowing down your roof is supposed to drain away from your home via the gutters and downspouts. If they are clogged, the rain will most probably be running down your homes outside exterior walls. All that water can potentially pool as standing water at the base of your foundation. Not a good thing. Additionally, if your street's sewers can't handle all the rainwater, it needs to go somewhere. This could be your home and or basement.

Check your Sump Pump periodically. Pretty simple to do. Fill a large bucket with water and pour it into the reservoir your sump pump sits in. It should come on and move the water back outside where it belongs. If it doesn't, get it fixed so it's ready for your next big storm.

Hope this helps and gives you some peace of mind.

Fire Prevention Measures

6/5/2023 (Permalink)

Fire Safety Tips for your Family and HomeSafeguarding your Family and Home from a potential fire situation is Greatly enhanced if you consider 3 key steps. Prevention, Detection, and Escape.

Prevention Starts With You! One of the 1st and most important things you can do is making sure you have Smoke and Fire detectors in your home and properly placed. It is recommended that you place (1) in each bedroom, typically on the ceiling near the door to the room. Smoke and Heat will typically travel upwards so placing an alarm in a hallway near any stairwell can alert you quicker and potentially identify a location of the source of the fire. Check your system on a regular basis to ensure they are in good working order and be ready to Replace any batteries as needed. Important note from FEMA- 51% of all deaths as a result of home fires happen while family members are asleep, between 11PM and 7AM. Have and practice an Evacuation Plan that everyone in your home knows. If your alarms start to Sound… Get everyone out of the house immediately. Then call your local fire department from a safe place. This number should already be stored in your phone's contact list. They are Trained for this Emergency and will be there asap. Having a fire extinguisher or (2) is another recommendation but you should always consider your personal safety before going back into the home. You and your family's safety is more important than the contents in your home. A fire and the smoke from it, can completely envelope your home in as little as 5 minutes. Be Safe, Be Prepared!!!  SERVPRO of Oak Park/ Ferndale(248) 246-0790

How often are you checking your building?

5/2/2023 (Permalink)

How often should you inspect your commercial property?

More often than you think. Often sources of damage hide themselves from view for a long time before doing their damage. A small pinhole in a pipe could develop into a large crack before you know it. Or a weird smell could turn out to be mold growth that has gone undiscovered until then.

Checking throughout your property once every few months will enable you to spot problems that could grow into disasters if left unchecked. Maybe that old furnace needs to be replaced for fear of catching fire or that one leaky pipe should be replaced before any mold can begin to grow.

Being in the know can prevent disasters, keeping your business open and customers happy.

Be sure to call the SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale if you believe you have a problem that needs to be addressed so we can make it, Like it Never Even Happened!

Flammable Materials in Your Home

2/1/2023 (Permalink)

We all know fire can spread very quickly, but are there things in our home helping the spread of a potential fire? Certain materials are more flammable than others and will catch fire rapidly. Here are some things that are common that could increase the damage done to your home during a fire.

WOOD
One of the more obvious materials is wood. We use it in outside fires all the time without making the connection that a good portion of our homes are made of wood. Cabinets and furniture made of wood can set alight easily if exposed to flame as well as the framing that supports our homes structurally.

CLOTH
Things such as cloth outside of furniture and blankets will very easily catch fire and act as tinder to set other things alight. Curtains and closets full of clothing will ignite almost instantly when exposed to open flame at high enough temperatures leading to out-of-control fires very quickly.

INSULATION
Older homes have insulation such as cellulose based blown-in insulation that are not as fire resistant as modern insulation. This is basically shredded paper meaning it will catch fire extremely fast and start a chain reaction that sets nearby insulation alight as well.
While there isn’t much you can do to eliminate these materials from being in your home, Being knowledgeable about the subject can help you understand what could happen in the event of a house fire.

Be sure to call the SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale if you experience a house fire to make it, Like It Never Even Happened!

Water Damage From Frozen Pipes and How to Prevent them

2/1/2023 (Permalink)

Winter Freezes can do just as much damage to a home as a flood, if not more. Some people think they just have to keep the snow off of the roof but the temperature is what you need to watch the most.

If not properly insulated, the cold can freeze your pipes that can become ticking timebombs as they thaw. Coming home from a vacation to find your house soaking wet is the last thing anyone wants. Here are some things you can do to help prevent damage to your home.

*KEEP THE HEAT UP
A lot of people try to save money during winter by keeping the heat low but some areas of the home are extremely susceptible to these low temperatures. The bathroom and attic are some of the more common areas that have piping running in exterior walls, so make sure these areas are nice and warm.

*INSULATE YOUR PIPES
Putting foam or wool covers over your exposed pipes can help keep them warm against the air and keep them from freezing for longer than uninsulated pipes.

* INSPECT YOUR PIPES
If you are unsure if your pipes have frozen check them for any deformities or Cracks with exposed ice. Small leaks or drips may also be a sign your pipe has frozen and will need to be addressed. Make sure the water is shut off if you notice any of these things to prevent water continuously spraying.

Hopefully these tips will help keep your home safe from these harsh temperatures we are currently experiencing, and be sure to call the
SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale if you experience any water damage this winter to make it, Like It Never Even Happened!

House fire with more damage than meets the eye.

11/7/2022 (Permalink)

House, Fire, Soot, black, front of home, attic area. A fire took place in a local residence. SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale was a part of this Restoration.

Just by observing this picture, does it appear that the fire that happened in this home was severe? I can tell you it was. That is why there is a familiar saying, never judge a book by it’s cover. A fire in the attic area went from the garage into the kitchen and through out other areas of the home. Many of the walls, carpet, flooring had to be gutted, taken out, and will be reconstructed. Our technicians work hard when there is a fire trying to save as many contents as possible. If the SERVPRO team can restore any personal property for the homeowner that will be discussed with them. The items are cleaned with SERVPRO cleaning products and carefully stored in SERVPRO Content boxes. Technicians are also trained in how to properly store belongings and what should and should not be packed together. If you have had an unfortunate fire loss, please contact your local SERVPRO.

Basement Commercial Lab

11/4/2022 (Permalink)

Basement, water, shelves, remove contents SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale preparing to extract water from a basement Lab floor.

As you can see in this commercial building, they had a water loss in which a good portion of the floor was wet with pooling areas of water. This Lab had some contents on the floor that was affected. Paperwork and files are a very important part of a business. When water comes from a higher area such as a wall, ceiling, or roof anything that is on a shelf can also get wet. It is important to check every level of your business a few times a year to see if you discover any wet, damp areas. From the ceiling to the floor. Especially by drains. Holes or cracks, wet ceiling spots or discoloration could be a sign that something is going on in that space. Old or new pipes, materials, because of the weather change here in Michigan could potentially cause contraction and expansion. Quick reminder, if you have water or moisture there is a high probability that you may also have mold. Contact your local SERVPRO with any questions. We are always her to help!

Halloween Safety!

10/5/2022 (Permalink)

Preparations for Halloween start even before the month begins. Safety is always the number one concern this time of year. Let us go over a few tips to keep our children safe.

-Costumes, wigs, should be fire resistant, as well as proper fitting to avoid tripping.

-Face painting may be a better option than a mask. (non-toxic) Masks can obscure the vision.

-Accessories should never have sharp or pointed ends.

-Reflective tape should be attached to all costumes including carrying bags.

-Putting a phone number and first name to be reached IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY on or inside a costume would be beneficial.

-All children should be supervised by parents or an adult they trust.

-Flash lights and charged phones should be a part of the to do list.

-Please instruct children to never dart or run across the street. Look BOTH WAYS and WATCH FOR ALL CARS, wait safely until a car passes. Cross at cross walks and NOT in the middle of the block. Watch for all cars pulling in and out of driveways.

-Stay away from lit candles.

-Remind children to NEVER EAT any candy until it is checked by a trusted adult.

-Anything suspicious, REMEMBER TO CALL 911

_AND MOST OF ALL DO NOT TALK TO STRANGERS!

*Have a Happy and Safe Halloween from the team here at SERVPRO OF Oak Park Ferndale!*

What is safer? Tap or Bottled Water?

9/27/2022 (Permalink)

Is our drinking water a real concern? What is the difference between tap water and bottled water? Is one better than the other?

 Tap Water

*Environmental-selecting tap water over bottled is with out a doubt much better for the environment. Less plastic equals healthy environment.

*Taste-While some believe that tap water has less quality in taste, in a blind taste test, it was very hard to tell the difference between the two.

*Expense-While water is one of your Utility bills or free when you find it elsewhere within the community from public drinking fountains. We simply get to turn on a faucet in our home and restaurants. Tap water is extremely cost effective as opposed to bottled water.

*Safety-According to the CDC our tap water is one of the safest in the world. A nonprofit organization called Food & Water watch say that our tap water is more subject to testing as opposed to bottled water.

*Bottom line-Research is always necessary. Tap water contain microorganisms and chemicals. And not all contaminants are subject to regulation.

 Bottled Water

*Environmental-According to the nonprofit organization Container recycling Institute EVERY DAY in the US people throw away 60 million plastic water bottles. And we all know where they end up.

*Taste-It is said you may want to consider the source, may of the bottled waters are simply filtered tap water. The taste difference will differ if you choose sparkling water, flavored or mineral.

*Expense-It is written that bottled water is 2,000 more the expense of tap water. Yet, very convenient to hand out in situations where water is not readily available.

*Safety-The FDA sets the rules for bottled water. Requiring the safety. However, through processing and plastic itself many water bottles contain microplastics contamination.

*Bottom line-Again do your research. If it is important for you to know what you are consuming and what is best for you. Research the direct source.

Popular Store took a hard hit

9/2/2022 (Permalink)

structure, walls gone, insulation gone, flooring gone Popular Commercial business took a hard hit and a total loss of inventory including the inside structure.

SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale received the call. When a team Restoration company walks into any situation you can’t image how large the loss will be. Especially in a Commercial business that has a huge amount of inventory. In the case of this popular store, because of the type of loss it was, pretty much everything had to be thrown away. From the back of the store to the front. A major sewage backup in which the water was spread throughout the entire store overnight. Getting in the carpet, into the lower walls and insulation. The loss of product on top of the structure is a hard hit. SERVPRO will always make the most effort to restore anything that can cleaned and disinfected. Unfortunately, because it was sewage this company was most honorable in making sure that no customer would be affected by this Biohazard waste. If your Commercial business needs a carpet cleaning or has any kind of Restoration needs, please call your local SERVPRO right away. Our staff will guide you throughout the entire process.

All SERVPRO’S ARE INDIVIDUALLY OWNED AND OPERATED.

Is there water behind or under this surface? Let me use my moisture detector.

8/4/2022 (Permalink)

Gloves, wall, floor, moisture detector In a water loss, not all water can be detected by sight. The moisture detector indicates there is water present under the surface.

When SERVPRO receives a call for a water loss there are important questions that we need to ask. Where is the water coming from? When did this happen and how long has it been there? What areas has the water affected? Have you called a plumber and has the company come out yet? These are a few examples. Before SERVPRO can do their job, the plumber needs to come in and rectify the location of the problem first. Once the plumbing has been fixed. SERVPRO comes in and not only cleans but also checks to see if the water is in the walls or floor or any area that would cause water to hide itself in. In this picture our technician used a handheld moisture detector. It is in the red, which indicates there is water under the wood floor and tile. When water has seeped under a floor, you can’t dry it. The floor needs to be removed to dry underneath that surface. Or drywall may need to be removed along with insulation. These detectors can read moisture through wood, timber, drywall, roofing, plaster, brick and tile.

Massive Product loss in Commercial Business.

7/22/2022 (Permalink)

plastic, containment, drying, empty Commercial business took massive loss on products and structure.

Recently we worked with a company that took a massive loss on their commercial business. Contents, partial dry wall, carpet, racks, had to be discarded due to bio contamination of a sewage backup. This was my first time seeing such a large loss. When we think of Restoration, we know that it means returning something to the original condition or place. In many cases it means exactly that, like wiping the slate clean, and all that is in between can not be saved. Contamination of objects could potentially be a health concern. What kind of contamination am I talking about? Parasites, fungi, bacteria, viruses. Also not limited to these examples of concern. SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale took on this role of restoring this commercial business by eliminating all merchandise that was affected by this nasty back up that consumed much of their products and structure.

Why do I have spider webs after a fire?

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

Stove fire, soot, black, webs Soot tags form after a fire that have the appearance of spider webs.

What are some noticeable signs of a fire besides the obvious? If you have experienced a fire it may surprise you or even creep you out to see these spider looking webs in higher places along your doors and ceiling. There is a name and reason. They are called soot webs or (soot tags) even in smaller fires these webs are common. What does fire create? HEAT! When you feel heat what do you want to do? Get to a cooler area right? It is the same with hot air that moves causing the smoke and soot to move along with it. In an area that has lower air circulating the particles are what forms the web like threads to appear. The fire that took place in this home was unfortunate. SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale received the call. If you or anyone you know has had a fire loss and are unsure what company to turn to. Please call our office at 248-246-0790.

Who predicts the storms and how?

7/18/2022 (Permalink)

Yellow sign, warning, storm damage An indication of what happened here. Nature took it by storm.

Meteorologists, also known as Forecasters are scientists who study the conditions of weather. Many tools are used to predict storms coming all around the world. What tools do they use? Surface maps, radar, and satellites. Surface maps help indicate high or low pressure. High pressure gives us the beautiful sunny skies. When low pressure is stipulated we are heading in a stormy direction. Computer forecasting models are used for different scenarios of what could happen within the atmosphere. Everyday millions of monitoring time from satellites are recorded. Meteorologists have dozens of these models to observe and any slight changes in the atmosphere can cause a different result. Technology has come a long way over the years in aiding us with warnings of storms so we can do our best to protect ourselves.

If your home or business fell victim to storm damage, please call your local SERVPRO. We are a preferred vendor to many insurance companies. SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale-248-246-0790.

What should I do to teach my child about fire safety?

7/15/2022 (Permalink)

When a fire starts in your home (or any area) children are not familiar with the flames, this could be one of the most frightening experiences they go through and they have no idea how dire the situation could potentially be. Starting children at an age appropriate time where they can learn as to what, and what not to do, is a very good idea. There are kid-friendly books regarding fire safety. Starting there is good practice. Playing games. When you participate in an activity children have a much better chance at remembering what they did. Many ideas are on the internet about what activities you can choose without it being a scary subject. Practice is vital. Not all situations will be the same, but if they have a basic understanding of what to do, they have a better chance of not panicking and getting out safely. I taught my children to never go with a stranger! Children may hide for this reason. It is important to talk about who and in what situation they may allow themselves to accept the offer of help.

Is there such a thing as safe Mold?

7/13/2022 (Permalink)

Would you be surprised if I told you there are everyday foods we consume that have a percentage of mold in them? According to the companies that produce these products it is considered safe mold. Safe meaning, they cannot produce harmful mycotoxins. One example of a product containing a safe mold would be blue cheese, or gorgonzola. There is another mold called koji (aspergillus oryzae) used to ferment soybeans. You guessed it. It is in soy sauce. This same mold is used in vinegar.

And yet...this same safe mold could in fact spoil other products. WHO KNEW???

There is some food you can save by cutting the growth off, such as hard fruits and vegetables or a roll of salami.

Examples of a couple of products you should throw away. Any kind of jam or jelly. Peanut butter. Soft fruits or vegetables.

Well at least there is a positive? Right?

Storms and Generators

7/11/2022 (Permalink)

Storms come and go. Some regions get hit hard while other communities are fortunate to miss the chaos. I remember in 2014 the storm that hit my section here in Michigan, my bellow stairs were flooded 3 feet deep. I pretty much lost everything down there. Collectively, so did many of my neighbors. The neighborhood had storm drains backed up in almost every lower area of their home. What a mess! We lost power. I did not have a portable generator. I still don’t. It’s time. Storms are forever unpredictable. I decided to look up information on what kind of generator I need and there is much to learn. Here are a couple of important factors I did not know. Without a transfer switch, (We need that switch!) a portable can not power hard-wired appliances. (Well pump or furnace) It is best to consider appliances that are most important that you can plug in to an extension cord. It is a must to find the wattage requirement of each appliance. (That is on the refrigerator or stove itself. You need to look for it.)

Watts=Amps x volts

(EXAMPLE)

If your mechanism draws 20 amps from a 120-volt outlet that would mean you would need to times (20 x 120) of electricity. That device would then use 2,400 watts of electricity.

It is important to research so you have some knowledge on what you need. Then speak with a professional that is well equipped to help you choose what is best.

Storm, Storm go away, please don’t come back any day!

Would you like a storm to be named after you?

7/7/2022 (Permalink)

Have you ever wondered how storms are named? If you are like me and enjoy researching new topics, you will be surprised of the interesting history behind these names. I can give you a brief summary, but I do recommend you read on this subject for yourself.

Storms were once called by their latitude and longitude. Which caused much confusion and errors. By the late 1800’s a formal naming system was cultivated by the United States Navy, in which the hurricane for example would be named after the ship’s commanding officer, wife or another female relative.

Storms originally started with female names. But, in 1978 according to research, the public was outraged by the absence of male names. Today, both are used. In 1978, both female and male naming has been rotated for Pacific and Atlantic storms. You can check to see if your name is on the list by going to: World Meteorological Organization. Many names have been retired (86 to date) and some are even renamed.

Here are a few names that potentially may be used for Atlantic Storms in 2022.

What kind of fire am I smelling?

7/7/2022 (Permalink)

You might see it first or smell it first, either way, it becomes very clear what it is. FIRE!!! Today we are going to try and distinguish the difference between what kind of fire has started based on our smell. For example:

Electrical Fire-some may experience the smell of fish or burning plastic. Or worse. No smell at all. But if you hear a bee like buzzing sound or have a brown or blackish gray outlet. It’s electrical.

Chemical Fire-may or may not smell similar to an alcohol based odor. (Remember these may smell different to you.) Suggestions are based on what other people have experienced.

Furnace burning smell-when you first turn your heat on for the first time in a while when the colder temperatures are back you may smell a slight burning smell. (the aroma could present itself as a fire) due to dust and dirt that needs to be cleaned in the vent system. But always check! You know what ASSUME means.

Wood Fire-smells like a campfire, but much stronger.

Gas fire-a sulfur and gas mixture.

Again, we taste, smell, and hear different from others. It’s good to know that we have something to reference back to.

Water Parks are they safe?

7/6/2022 (Permalink)

Water park, slides, Water Park fun in the sun for all.

Water parks can be a fun activity for the day, the excitement of getting in the car and heading there especially for the younger ones can make you feel like you can’t get there fast enough. Upon arriving, seeing the slides, Waterspouts and flotation devices along with the wave pool (which seems to be most popular) make it a mad rush to get in and enjoy with everybody else.

Like everything else in life, even when we are enjoying ourselves we are required to obey the rules even if we do not always agree with them. They make the rules based on data and experience.

If you had to take a guess, which water park activity has the highest risk of drowning? If you guessed wave pool, you are correct. Because of the crowded people bobbing up and down in the water it is not easy to tell if someone could be potentially drowning or enjoying the waves. Smaller or weaker swimmers should always have on a life jacket. Also, parents should never leave a child unattended in the wave pool or any other water feature. Keep children within your reach.

Taking a shower before hand, should also be a rule. With that being said, I think you understand why. No using the pool as a toilet! Gross! There is some contamination out there that is resistant to chlorine. All baby’s swimwear should be checked frequently. You should also shower before you go home.

Water will make many materials slippery. Please walk!

There are no requirements that mandates monitoring in the water park. It is up to the adult or adults to be watching all the time.

There is also a weight and height rule for most rides. And with good reason. Falling off or out of a ride. Or getting stuck are two of them.

Please read all rules before considering taking a loved one to a water park. Look up the website, rules are on there.  It can be a great time for everyone if you are considerate to those around you.

Happy swimming!

My favorite! Amazing!! I had to share!

Cucumber, Avocado, sesame seeds A very simple salad to toss together. You can add fish or chicken if you'd like. It is delicious! Enjoy!

Sesame Cucumber and Avocado Salad

  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil, plus more to taste
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, plus more to taste (see notes)
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds, plus more for garnish (see notes)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar, plus more to taste
  • 1 ½ teaspoons soy sauce OR tamari, plus more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon red-pepper flakes, plus more to taste
  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1 pound cucumbers (such as Persian or English), trimmed and thinly sliced
  • 2 green onions, trimmed and thinly sliced
  • Coarse salt and ground black pepper

In a small bowl, combine the sesame oil, rice vinegar, sesame seeds, sugar, soy sauce and red-pepper flakes. Add 1 tablespoon of water and whisk until blended. Taste, and adjust seasonings. (Dressing should taste acidic, a little sweet and a little salty.)

Halve the avocados and discard the pits. Using a small paring knife, carefully score the avocado flesh into ½-inch cubes, avoiding cutting through the skin. Use a large spoon to scoop out the avocado flesh, as close to the skin as possible, into a large bowl. Add the dressing; toss gently. Add the cucumbers and green onions and toss everything together. Season with salt and black pepper, top with more sesame seeds, and serve immediately.

What months are the most common for storms?

6/21/2022 (Permalink)

Ever wonder when storms our most likely to occur throughout the year? You will have a better idea on how to prepare if you know the pattern of behavior. Storms can come at any time, but to my surprise April, May and June are the most active Months. Growing up in Michigan I honestly thought July and August were the hottest most humid months of the year. My Michigan people, do you agree? The main components to a thunderstorm are rapid rising warm air and moisture. By the way, today is officially the first day of summer. June 21st and will end on September 22nd.

*Interesting Facts*

A Texas storm in 1995 poured hailstones as large as softballs. 16,800 people lost power. It was reported that within 1 hour, some of the roads in Fort Worth were buried under 2 feet of hailstones.

September 2017, Labor Day weekend to be exact. In Northern California a heatwave turned grapes into raisins. The sweltering heat desiccated the moisture from the grapes. It was estimated that wine vineyards lost up to 50 percent of their harvest.

To your advantage in a storm situation, SERVPRO IS HERE TO HELP!

Don't allow your summertime to go up in flames.

6/6/2022 (Permalink)

Summertime is here. The sun is shining, the trees and flowers are coming into full bloom and people want to be outside planting flowers, enjoying activities and getting together. Summer is one of the best times of the year. This time of the year is also when fires are more prevalent due to dry leaves, grass, air. When we are having fun, we tend to get caught up in the moment. Sometimes we don’t realize the potential danger that could cause a fire to get out of control. I would like to share some reminders to keep our parks, trails, forests, animals, homes, and businesses safe.

If you smoke. Never throw your cigarette or cigar (or anything that can be lit) in a wooded area or on dry grass. Please put your Cigarette or cigar out completely and dispose of it in a proper container.

When barbecuing be certain to only cook food in an open and designated area. Please do not walk away from the flames, if you must, have another person watching until you come back. Be certain to always put the fire out completely after you are finished.

The same goes for any fire pits, gas or otherwise.

Keep gas containers on a shelf away from anything flammable. It is best to leave it by itself and store it in the coolest spot away from direct sunlight. Best wishes to all for a safe and happy summer from our team here at SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale.

That is the question. Why SERVPRO?

6/3/2022 (Permalink)

water loss, wet carpet, fans, drying School had a large water loss. Our SERVPRO team of technicians came in to get this resolved as quickly as possible.

Why should I choose SERVPRO as my restoration company to call in an emergency? 50 years of experience and being a preferred vendor to most insurance companies is a very good reason. One of the conversations I often have talking with people about our services is many will tell me they will take on the cleaning themselves. You can do that, but, more often than not, a specialist such as SERVPRO will be called in because the situation you thought was solved in fact was not. It is best to call in the  SPECIALISTS. When it comes to cleaning and disinfecting our team is trained in water, fire, mold, bio damage. They know what products to use, how much drying needs to take place and they know when areas need to be contained. The technicians who see these disasters almost daily understand the concern of a loss and are there to give you a peace of mind when you are unsure of the process. Please call SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale if you have any questions.

Summertime and water safety. Where can I call to take a CPR class?

5/4/2022 (Permalink)

Water, sand, family time Summertime at the Beach jumping the waves.

Summer is approaching, the warmth of the sun and hot days draw people to water. Whether it is the pool or a beach we get excited about being in it. As refreshing and cool as the water can be, we must always remember that water can also pose a serious threat when not paying attention or following guidelines. Adults drinking and kids swimming is NOT a good combination. Someone should always take charge of keeping an eye on children. Even the ones who know how to swim. Kids play and sometimes may not realize that their actions could potentially cause another harm. It is recommended that if you have small children they should be taught how to swim and know all water safety rules, (Age appropriate) including to call for help if they see someone else in trouble. CPR classes are highly suggested. For more information on becoming CPR certified call your local:

American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National Safety Council, EMS Safety Services Inc., American Safety & Health Institute.

How do I know if my commercial building has mold?

5/3/2022 (Permalink)

In a commercial building it may be very hard to detect if any mold has begun to grow in areas of the structure. Always use your nose. Where mold is present, it is a very distinct odor. And it does not matter how long you have worked or lived there you will NOT get used to that smell. I have walked into buildings and immediately knew there was a water loss at one time or there is water or moisture somewhere in the area. Unfortunately, more likely than not. It is in the air. Mold in the air could potentially cause respiratory issues for some. The proper way to keep your commercial premises safe, is to inspect areas often that could contain moisture or hidden water. Repair any water leaks or damage as soon as you detect it. The HVAC system coils should be checked regularly. Pans, or any other areas in the system that could be plugged up can cause moisture, that is a breeding ground for mold. Also, the location of the HVAC is important. Air coming in from areas with standing water or garbage dumpsters could cause an increase in fungal spores. Bottom line. If you can smell it. It’s present. Call your local SERVPRO. We are the experts in mold removal.

Commercial Building Inspection is Necessary

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

A Commercial building inspection is very important to the safety of the structure and all employees. Weather plays a very significant role on a building because of the everyday elements of wind, rain, moisture, storms, and tornadoes. Depending on what state you live in, there are different requirements that inspectors need to mandate to ensure that the premises are structurally sound. You can google a printable checklist online. However, it is best to call the building inspectors office and find out if they have a specific list they use for your area and location. The more you know, the more you can be prepared for what to expect. Inspections can be a time of frustration for some Commercial building owners because of the time and detail and what may need to be replaced or fixed. It is however, better to be safe than have a disaster to deal with that could cost you much more than time.

A short example: Commercial Inspection

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial Building Structures include:

*Manufacturing Buildings

*Office

*Retail

*Townhomes/Apartments Complex’s {to name a few}

~Exterior and Interior Inspection are equal in importance. I will share with you a few of the main elements of a Commercial Building Inspection.~

*Do you have Fire Protection? Exits?

*Are Heating and Plumbing systems working properly?

*Do you have proper Ventilation and Air Conditioning?

*Does your Roof surface need to be updated?

*Is your Structural Frame in good condition?

*Is the Mechanical and Electrical up to code?

*Are your Utilities, landscaping, paving in good condition?

~Whether you are buying or already occupying the property, it may take some time to get through all the requirements on that list before you can acquire an approval from an inspector or the team of inspectors that have an expertise in a specific trade.~

Safety is our first priority

We take what we do seriously and are in the business to give you a piece of mind once we are gone. Melting snow that turns into water is VITAL!

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

I could guess, many have never thought of snow turning into water as being essential. We have a more pessimistic outlook when it comes to the cold weather and falling snow. Personally, it is one of my favorite seasons. I know, I get the odd looks when I mention that fact.

Snowmelt is equally as important as rain. This liquid that runs into oceans, lakes, and streams help to supply freshwater to all of us, as well as animals and plants. Think of it as a replenishing process. Like rain it provides the ground with new life to aid in the process of new growth. Of course, as with all things, an excess of water from this precipitation could cause flood water as well. An even balance is what we always hope for. As we have learned year after year, mother nature always seems to have an unknown plan.

Today I prefer to share with you the positive important role that water from melting snow provides. In the hope that we all can understand that without the cold months and the white fluffy stuff that falls from the sky we wouldn’t have enough of the fluid we need to assist us in maintaining a healthy environment.

Campfire safety under the stars.

2/9/2022 (Permalink)

If what you want is a real camping experience, then you will want to learn how to build a campfire.

What is the most important first step? Building it with safety in mind!

Here are some tips on how to enjoy a campfire under the stars.

> Check for guidelines with your local officials ON WHO TO CONTACT for rules regarding campfires before you do anything! DO NOT ASSUME IT IS OKAY!

>If you receive approval, FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES! Here are a few tips I found as I researched this subject. Look for a spot that is at least 15 feet away from anything flammable and away from brush or hanging branches. The area should be sheltered from the wind. Find flat ground not along a rolling hillside.

>Look for an area that is exposed to earth, NOT grass. (especially dry dead grass) you may find a spot where you can clean up  debris that has piled up over time and opens up to dirt underneath to set the platform. Give yourself much needed space. Finding (DRY ROCKS ONLY) the size of your closed hand to make a circle is best. Space the rocks slightly apart so the air will circulate at the bottom of the fire.

>Gather dry wood such as tinder and kindle. If it doesn’t snap, it will not burn well. Only use wood pieces that has fallen. Tinder and kindle (tinder smaller sticks bark, and leaves, kindle longer and larger sticks) is the best way to get the fire going. Research what is the best way to ignite the fire. (Example: a flex neck lighter)

>Finding wood as the main source of the campfire you should try and find pieces that are the size of your arm. Two ways you can arrange your start up is:

*The Tepee-tinder should be in a bundle in the center of the circle then placing the wood like a tepee on top of the tinder. Leaving a gap at the top for air flow. Adding tinder and kindle as needed.

*Lean-to: place tinder and kindle in the center of the pit then a larger log on top but off to the side place larger kindling sticks on top of the tinder with them leaning over the larger log. Once in place add your wood pieces to keep the fire going.

>Keep in mind this is a process which takes time and patience. Increase wood pieces slowly as needed avoiding suffocating the fire. This will keep your campfire steady.

>When you are ready to put it out for the night, do not add any wood. Let it die down. DO NOT LEAVE THE CAMPFIRE BURNING AND WALK AWAY! Make sure you have COMPLETELY EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE! You can use a long stick to move the ashes around and pour water on top of any wood still burning. Repeat this process until EVERYTHING HAS BEEN PUT OUT! This could take some time. Patience is MOST IMPORTANT!

>Last but not least-Clean up before you leave to go back home. Make sure all the debris inside and outside of the pit is picked up and removed from the pit area. Remove the rocks and place them naturally in the area. Respecting the grounds and nature and other fellow campers allows everyone to enjoy the best camping adventure! Happy camping!

Did you know that MOLD can come in a Rainbow of colors?

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

Mold can come in a rainbow of colors. I did not realize this fact until I started researching. I found this very interesting and I think you will too. There are thousands of types of mold. Many you have never heard of before. Normally we talk about the most common mold to keep it simple.

*Orange Mold- Serpula lacrymans. (Referred to as dry rot) a very fast growing mold that affects wood. Eventually, this will cause severe damage to the wood.

*Blue mold- Penicillium mold. Can be found on walls and food.

*Pink Mold- Yes, the color you find in your shower area. It’s best to clean your shower often to prevent this mold.

*Green Mold-This is the most common color of mold.

*Yellow Mold- (Aspergillus). Could cause health effects.

*White Mold-can be one of a few different types of mold.

*Brown Mold-is another color that could be of several different mold territories.

*Red Mold-Can be found on drywall or particleboards, more than likely associated with water damage.

*Black Mold-the color most people get very nervous about. A bit of good news. Not all black mold is toxic.

*Purple Mold-this is not a color you will often see, however, more than not, it would most likely be associated with toxic black mold. Stachybotrys Chartarum.

NOW THAT YOU KNOW MOLD CAN BE MANY COLORS. (TOXIC OR NOT) IT IS ALWAYS BEST TO HAVE AN AIR QUALITY SPECIALIST COME TO YOUR HOME FOR TESTING SO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT KIND OF MOLD IS LIVING IN YOUR STRUCTURE.

Careers in water can be exciting. Here at SERVPRO it is just the opposite!

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

If you love water, do you know how many cool jobs involve water, water, water!

Let’s name a few.

*Aquaculture worker-Instead of being a farmer on land you would be raising fish and shellfish. How fun!

*Commercial Diver-Taking pictures of underwater life. Repairing equipment or structures. That is just the beginning.

*Hydrologist-They study everything there is to know about the water from pollution to floods and making sure there is enough water supply.

*Marine Biologist-They conduct studies in a controlled atmosphere or in natural habitats to analyze the reproduction and certain patterns of marine life. (I think this is my favorite!)

*Oceanographer-This person specializes in the deep sea. They specifically study the ocean and how it may affect climate and weather.

There are a few more jobs that you could research that you may not be in the water all the time but will be surrounded by it. Captain, deck hand or lifeguard. Unfortunately, in our business water more times than not, is not accompanied by good news, or wanted. Call your local SERVPRO even if you are not knee deep. Any water is a potential problem.

Avoiding a Thanksgiving Fire and staying safe.

11/24/2021 (Permalink)

Turkey. pumpkins, orange, wheat These pretty pumpkins represent what I am Thankful for. Do you agree?

Would it surprise you to know that Thanksgiving Day the risk of starting a fire goes up by 300 %? Through my research, that’s what I read. Wow! That’s concerning! Let me give you a few tips on what we all can do to avoid this kind of disaster.

*Never walk away from the stove or any other appliance you are using, such as fryers. It only takes a second for a spill or grease to hit the flame.

*As much as we would like to put the turkey in the oven to cook and leave to go get something you may have forgotten or need, it is not wise! Stay in the home.

*Make sure your smoke alarms are working before you start cooking. As an experienced cooker, there are always a lot of dishes to be prepared at the same time and we can get easily distracted.

*Keep towels, foil, paper of any kind away form the stove. Anything that could reach the flame.

*Do not overwhelm your outlets. Be aware if you have an outlet that is not working properly or an appliance. Do not use it. It is not worth it.

*Never leave children alone in the kitchen, they are curious and hot pans or reachable items could cause a dangerous situation that is avoidable.

*When cooking spills on a floor can cause a slip. Be sure to clean the area and make sure it is dry.

“SERVPRO of OAK PARK FERNDALE WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL OF YOU A SAFE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING!”

I have learned in this business above all, expect the unexpected. Before I came to work for SERVPRO I did not give much thought to the everyday occurrences of the different types of losses that go on in this industry. Old or new structures, there is no difference when it comes to a loss caused by failure due to failing pipes, electrical, weather or human error. I can not stress enough the importance having a company like SERVPRO to call upon in an emergency. Our company is a 24 hour service with trained techs on call. Call today and ask about our ERP. (Emergency Ready Profile) We can provide you with a sense of control knowing you have a source of expertise you can turn to.

Commercial Property is it worth the investment? You decide.

11/17/2021 (Permalink)

I always say, it takes a certain person to own and manage any Commercial Property. You would need to posses a strong desire to succeed and have money to invest. But the biggest investment is your time. In my thoughts as I pass by these buildings and companies, I have often wondered, what is takes. Do they ever get tired of such a massive responsibility? Or are they genuinely happy with their choice?

Key points to Yes or No of owning Commercial Property.

The reasons to say yes.

  • The obvious. Increased income.
  • Building relationships with the professional community.
  • Depending on what you put into your investment could potentially have added value to your property when it comes to selling.

The reasons to say No.

  • You as the property owner will pay any damages that occur on or within the structure. (Such as a roof)
  • Commitment to large amounts of time from personal life.
  • Looking for professional help.
  • The initial investment payment up front.
  • The biggest reason to say NO for me is the RISK. Vandals, slip and falls, if a car hits another car in the parking lot to name a few.

Owning Commercial Property can be a dream for some, and a nightmare for others.

Worst Storm in History

10/15/2021 (Permalink)

Homes destroyed, wood everywhere, belongings destroyed Galveston Texas Number 1 on the list of worst storms in US History.

I came across an article a few weeks back and found some information on some of the most devastating storms in the US. Had me thinking to look up what storm has been the worst in US history. According to my research Galveston Texas September 8th, 1900 was the worst natural disaster with winds at 135 MPH. Leaving 8,000-12,000 lives to perish. It is said that complacency among the towns people played a role to some degree, that the people were warned it was coming. All storms are categorized between 1-5. Five being the worst. This storm was considered a four. I thought, back in those days the houses and most businesses were not built as strong as they are now. What could the people have done to prepare for a storm of this magnitude? I would think…NOT MUCH.

I love farmhouse projects and this is one of my favorites!

10/5/2021 (Permalink)

cream pumpkins, metal bucket, Wheat stems, cotton ball stems You don't have to be an avid crafter to make this beautiful farmhouse arrangement for your home. Have fun with it, you may surprise yourself!

I personally do not watch much TV, I enjoy making projects that I know I will love to look at in my home. It does not have to be expensive and I look for the best prices around. You don’t have to be a crafter either, you can MAKE IT! TRUST YOURSELF! I made something very similar to this beautiful bucket. With the holidays, you can change different items to go with the theme. I leave mine just the way it is for the most part. If I want to add more color or change the flowers, I will do that. I bought these exact pumpkins in the cream in two different sizes, I believe at Hobby Lobby. Most of the places I shop in to find these treasures instead of online is Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Dollar store, Marshall’s, Home Goods and TJ Maxx. Happy Crafting!

Through research these 2022 decor trends are the new look.

Green couch, Wallpaper walls, gold wood and white fabric chair According to the top designers on the internet we see an example of what to expect as the New Decor Fashion for 2022.

When it comes to décor and color palettes I will confess, this is a subject that makes me excited. The thought of putting all the elements together and seeing the final outcome is satisfying. As a former salesperson in the Marble industry these trends are something that I notice right away. I did do some research for 2022. Here are some examples of what will be the “new in” for the up in coming year.

Colors:

*Buttercream

*Green

*Pink

*Orange

*Blue

*Gold

*Nature Brown

Furniture:

*Rounded

*Rattan

*Gold Metals

*Wood

Fabrics:

*Linen

*Wool

*Silk

*Flax

*Burlap

Light Wood on Floors, Art, Glass and a very Minimalistic, Natural feel to the space is what we will be seeing more of.

Trends always make their way back from one time period or another but mixed together in different ways to give us something new and fresh to look at. Just painting a wall can make a fresh atmosphere. I painted my living room a Buttercream color 2 years ago. Who knew?!

Water facts are so interesting!

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

Water is such an essential part of our lives. I personally had no idea how many interesting facts are out there about this liquid. Hope you enjoy learning as much as I did.

*If the UNITED STATES alone, flushed the toilet 1 less time per day. It’s written that we could save a lake a mile in length and width with a depth of 4 feet. How many times do you think you flush?*

*They say over 90% of the worlds fresh water supply is over in Antarctica. 90%? Wow!*

*Next time you take a bath, think approximately 70 gallons of water to fill it, and 22,000 gallons for a  pool! “That’s just 1 bath and 1 pool”*

*Attention beer lovers. It takes 20 gallons of water to make 1 pint of beer. Think about that the next time you open a fridge at the store to grab a case.*

*They have studies that say it takes about 7 and a half years of our daily use of water in our homes to equal just 1 SECOND of the flowing water of Niagara Falls. Unreal! BTW..that number is 750,000 gallons per second.*

*For this next fact, this is a perfect reason to keep SERVPRO in your contacts! Leaks just from our homes can have a loss of 1 TRILLON gallons annually across the US. Which in turn equals that use of water in 11 million homes.*

Time for me to go drink a glass of water. This blog made me thirsty.

Water has its Pros and Cons.

8/6/2021 (Permalink)

I knew our bodies were about 60% water, but did you know that are blood is 90% water?

Helps skin and premature aging.

Water helps saliva which helps us swallow our food and digest it properly.

Without water we would be without oxygen in our blood and we need that to be delivered to all the parts of our body.

It helps regulate our body temperature through sweating then cooling down.

Helps the kidneys, water may help detour kidney stones.

H20 can help with weight loss and fullness before a meal. (Drink a glass or 2)

We need it to flush out the body waste.

Our brain and sensitive tissues need water to help us think properly.

To wash almost everything we use and ourselves.

We know how water is an essential component  of our everyday lives.

HOWEVER…WATER IS NOT GOOD WHEN IT GETS INTO ANY OBJECT THAT IS POROUS AND HAS A HARD TIME DRYING OR CAUSES CORROSION OR MOLD. WATER CAN BE DEVISTATING TO THE THINGS WE USE AND RELY ON. Facts about Fire

  1. Fire is a chemical reaction. That unleashes heat and light.
  2. Fire is a reaction of oxygen and fuel thus causing the Fire to burn.
  3. Without the oxygen in the air, it can not assemble heat and smoke.
  4. It has been said that Earth is the only place where fire can burn. Other places do not provide enough oxygen.
  5. A low oxygen fire will construct a yellow glow. While a high oxygen fire will burn blue.
  6. A blaze can be put out in 3 different ways.
    1. Water
    2. Smothering the Oxygen
    3. Exterminating the fuel source
  7. Impulsive combustion is a real thing! Some fuel sources can create heat on their own. Examples: Haystacks, old newspapers.
  8. It is not known who masterminded the fire hydrant. The patent was demolished in a fire in 1836. (WHO KNEW…IN A FIRE!)
  9. I heard you can start a fire with ice. I have yet to study that one.
  10. Fires move faster going uphill rather than downhill.
  11. Fun fact: In the old days fire stations used horses to get around on. They also had spiral staircases in the stations. Know why? To make sure the horses were unable to climb into the living space. Brilliant!

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT STORMS

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

wind, snow, words, storms Words to match that we certainly have different types of storms.

  1. HAIL STORMS-They cost an estimated $ 1 Billion a year when present. Hail can be small or very large and cause major damage due to dents, roof leaks and eventual water leaking into structures.
  1. THUNDERSTORMS-Very dangerous and highly incalculable these storms cause flash flooding. Thunderstorms can produce up to 30 feet of water causing trees and buildings to be torn out.
  1. WINDSTORMS-Some winds can reach up to 120 mph. Knocking down powerlines and up rooting trees. The demolition happens when the winds reach to speeds of 40-50 miles per hour. These storms can actually equal the damage of tornadoes.
  1. TORNADOES-Summer and Spring are when tornadoes are most likely to take place. Tornadoes can transcend over 300 mph! Anything can be pulled up out of place and thrown around causing the most dangerous threat. Thunderstorms release the vigor that puts the tornado in motion.
  1. BLIZZARDS-Heavy snow could cause roofs to collapse under the weight along with freezing temps and high winds and eventual snow melting causing water damage to get into a structure of any building or home.
  1. ICE STORMS-In freezing temps the snow can cover any surface and become a heavy piece of ice. Breaking and causing just as much damage as the heavy snow.
  1. HURRICANES-These winds are categorized between a 1 and 5. They could reach up to 157 mph. Any properties can be destroyed in the wake of a hurricane.
  1. SAND STORM/DUST STORM-Gusts of wind blow fine particles of sand that stay suspended in the air. If you are unfortunate to be caught up in this storm, over time these particles could be responsible for different kinds of health effects. Sand Storms rarely go above 50 feet from the ground.

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

Why should I choose SERVPRO as my go to Restoration Company?

For those of you who do not know, each SERVPRO is individually owned and operated. With, 1,800 locations all over the United States.

This past June and July of 2021 here in Detroit, Grosse Pointe and other major cities has been one of the largest floods we have had since 2014. I remember the last one well, because my city was one of the cities affected at that time. Lucky, for me, I missed this one.

Many, home and businesses were affected by the floods, causing major damage, from roofs leaking, to ceilings falling, water damage and mold to name a few.

Something else you may be unaware of. SERVPRO has EMERGENCY STORM TEAMS put in place that drive in from all over the US when a devastation like this happens to help all the local locations so they are not overwhelmed by the calls and jobs that pour in. (No pun intended.) Crews work as quickly as possible to get to each situation as soon as possible. These teams of individuals that are away from their home and families are true hardworking members of the SERVPRO family. In time like these, we need a company that has a back up plan in the case of an EMERGENCY CRISIS.

Air Quality Specialist for Mold Removal

7/20/2021 (Permalink)

mold, removal, proper coverings, gloves, mask Removal of mold after the testing has been proven positive.

Let’s face it. Mold is everywhere. It is part of the natural environment. It is not normally a real threat unless it grows indoors. Mold is caused by moisture and humidity. The most obvious way of knowing you have mold is by seeing or smelling a very strong musty odor. Do not ignore these signs if you become aware of the problem.

The best way of knowing exactly what you are dealing with is having your home tested. It is highly recommended that you have an air quality expert examine the levels of all contamination in your home or business. These specialists use a variety of tools and swabs strictly approved by the EPA and will determine if it is widespread or contained to one specific area.

Once assessed, a mold remediation company will be given a full report. From that point an appropriate course of action will be taken in the removal of these spores.

Call SERVPRO with any questions you may have regarding MOLD. Our company is here to help you have a clean safe living or workspace.

Putting a plan in place in the case of a fire could save your life.

7/20/2021 (Permalink)

house, fire, flames, heat, smoke Even though the flames may look contained to one area, the smoke is spreading quickly.

A fire is spreading quickly, what do you do? Easier said than done, try and remain as calm as possible so you can think with logic. Panic could lead you with an undesirable outcome.

~Every room should have an escape plan. Know your way out! Once the fire starts the room can fill up quickly with smoke making it difficult to see and breathe.

~CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IMMEDIATELY!

~GET OUT BEFORE IT SPREADS! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE BELONGINGS WITH YOU!

~Check the doors! DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR FIRST! IF YOU SEE SMOKE OR FEEL THE HEAT COMING THROUGH, FIND ANOTHER WAY OUT LIKE A WINDOW IF IT IS AVAILABLE.

~IF YOU DO NOT SEE SIGNS OF THE FIRE BEING CLOSE, FEEL THE DOOR-KNOB CAREFULLY,  IF IT IS WARM, FIND ANOTHER WAY OUT!

~IF THE DOOR-KNOB HAS NO SIGNS OF WARMTH, SLOWLY OPEN THE DOOR, ( IF YOU FEEL A WAVE OF HEAT COMING TOWARDS YOU CLOSE THE DOOR AGAIN!) IF NOT, PROCEED WITH YOUR EXIT PLAN!

Do you know the difference between a STORM WARNING and a STORM WATCH?

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

Storm. high winds, fallen tree, blocking a road A storm can cause a tall sturdy tree to fall down in it's wake.

When I was growing up I would always get confused between a storm warning and a storm watch. I would see it on the news but soon forget the difference between the two. I did understand that either way the weather that day was not in anyone’s favor and it was best to avoid plans and stay where I was.

If you still have trouble with the difference as I did, I will try and make the distinction clear for you.

***WATCH WILL ALWAYS COME BEFORE THE WARNING!***

*WATCH* Meteorologists observe and track the weather all day, every day throughout all the United States. When a threat of a storm is present through tracking of rising moisture in the air. The watch is to inform the public to stay knowledgeable for any changes that are coming to your area.

*WARNING* Is enlightening you to a potential serious threat to life and property. Local National weather offices are responsible for tracking in designated areas and to let you know, you should prepare and take cover in a safe place until the threat has passed.

What exactly is a fire?

7/9/2021 (Permalink)

Fire, wood, soot, burnt Close up of a piece of wood that was apart of a house fire.

Fire by definition is a state of combustion in which materials or fuel are ignited in combination with heat, oxygen and flame giving off light that produces burning.

The outcome of a fire can cause conflagration. Meaning: the destruction of an immense amount of area.

Oxidation, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor are the leading roles in the “fanning” shall we say, of the out of control blaze. The flame itself is what you physically see.

Depending on what substances cause the scorching the color and the intensity will be distinct.

Carbon dioxide and water releases energy which is minor in comparison to the other ingredients.

Bottom line is FIRE is EXSTREMELY HOT and nothing to take lightly. Once it starts, it only takes a moment to get it going and when that happens, you will not know the extent of destruction it will bring.

Call your local Fire Department to put out the flames. Then, call SERVPRO to help with the cleanup.

Waterfall Stairs

Storm, Rain, Falling Water, Stairs, Flooding, Water falling down a building stairs after a storm.

Strong rainstorm pours through the roof of this commercial building leaving the stairs looking like a mini Niagara Falls or a familiar scene from the Titanic. This was a photo taken by a young man who was in the building witnessing this in disbelief.

Storms are unpredictable and fierce. Minutes can cause a surmountable amount of harm to a building in its wake.

Here are some suggestions to keep yourself as safe as possible during a rainstorm that is invading a structure.

*You should avoid bathing or talking a shower*

*DO NOT USE ANY ELECTRONICS, SUCH AS YOUR COMPUTER, LAPTOP, WASHER OR DRYER. ANYTHING THAT COMES IN CONTACT WITH AN ELECTRIAL OUTLET!

*Find the safest place to be if you are directly in the storm and after it has passed*

Water damage and the importance of knowing your home's history.

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

Water, wall, floor, removal of floor Water loss could mean removal of a toxic floor.

We have gone over mold concerns when it comes to a water loss. Another concern rarely mentioned is Abestos. What is it? And what should I do?

After a water loss, you should gather all the information that you have about your home. The year it was built and so on. This will determine many factors as to how to handle your situation properly.

Abestos is a natural mineral that is resistant to heat, electricity, and corrosion. Many products have been used over the years with this component for insulation and strength. These mineral fibers are highly toxic and were once mined in North America.

SERVPRO teams will always ask the appropriate questions regarding walls, flooring, ceiling, attic to make sure that not only are we there to prevent mold after a water situation but to appropriately discard anything that may have this in it.

All contaminants of this kind need to be inspected by highly trained professionals. SERVPRO is here to help you get the correct company for testing. Unfortunately, there are more hazards that may be lurking under objects before we can get to the drying and cleaning in your structure.

Let us know about your next water loss. The SERVPRO SQUAD is here to help!

Flooded Elevator

6/30/2021 (Permalink)

Storm, Elevator, Water, Flood Elevator consumed by water during a rain storm.

This large building took on water from a storm that flooded areas of this structure leaving the water to spread into the elevator with no place to go.  To the surprise of people trying to use the elevator the shock of 1-2 feet of water as the doors opened was a bit frightening. Water can do as much damage as a fire in many ways, you either deal with soot from a fire or mold from the water. Both are comparable damage.

*Hidden places that water can travel, which can affect the way a device functions or could possibly completely shut down.

*Any object that is porous, spaces, holes, that any liquid or air can go directly through.  Many of those items may have to be thrown out due to eventual rotting inside or unstable strength and more than likely due to the storm it may be sewer water damage even if you think it is not. SERVPRO PROFESSIONALS know the difference.

*A ceiling or structure of a building or home can cave in under the weight or winds in a storm.

*Every emergency of this kind has a uniqueness depending on how much water and where.

*Drying, containing, cleaning, disinfecting and in many cases tearing down or discarding is the same as any other unforeseen disaster.

ADVICE: If you have found yourself in an area that was hit hard with a water storm, you are correct in thinking neighbors and others have damage too. SERVPRO PROVIDES STORM TEAMS that come from all over the states to help one another out in an emergency.

Restoring is not always an option.

6/3/2021 (Permalink)

Water loss, Wood Walls, Tear Out, Large Clean up Beautiful wood walls must come down.

Restoring is what SERVPRO is accredited for. However, in many situations the damage is so overwhelming there is no other obvious choice but to tear everything out. In this photo, this customer took an immense loss due to a water burst of an old pipe. Beautiful wood walls had to come down.

Water can be one of the hardest situations to be in. It is usually clear (unless it is dirty water) and the eye can not always detect where it goes. Therefore, behind a wall it causes the most damage. Insulation, wood frames and wiring can be affected.

Water loss can cause other problems to arise such as MOLD. In an area as big as this one where the water crept through just about every part of this room, moisture is present when the area is really wet and that is when mold thrives.

SERVPRO is the company to call. Why? Because we care. We strive to let our customers know what we are doing every step of the way. Any questions or concerns we will listen and respond to the best of our knowledge and anything you are uncomfortable with we will come up with a solution that works best for you. Our technicians are trained to know what to do on site and all jobs are carefully analyzed before leaving the shop.

SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale is here to assist you in your time of need. 248-246-0790. Whether it is a large water loss or small, SERVPRO IS HERE TO DO IT ALL!

This was NO Movie! It was live!

Sewage back up, basement, deep water, objects floating. Local Movie Theatre has SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale reeling in water. NO PROBLEM. THAT IS WHAT WE DO!

Ready, Set, Action! Words we have come to know when movies are being filmed. The excitement about what is going to happen on that screen…

And then..Boom…what just happened? For one local Movie Theatre, the unexpected just like in a film, a sewage back up in the basement caused water to just pour in and start filling up. SERVPRO of Oak Park Ferndale was asked to do the pump out so the plumbers and other vendors could come in and do their job.

Sewer back up is, well, to put it nicely, gross. When this happens, it is water pushing up through your drainpipes in your home or commercial structure that involves filthy water. If not taken care of immediately it could cause damage to your property and health.

Pumping out water is crucial like any other part of the restoration process. Depending on how much water, it could be heavy and cause stress on the structure.

There are Two ways to deplete the liquid. I SUGGEST YOU HAVE THIS DONE BY TRAINED PROFESSIONALS. They know the areas where water can hide.

*Portable extractors usually have a five to twelve gallon storage tank.

*Truck Mounted extractors have a storage of over one hundred gallons.

*Both extractors can be fitted with tools such as a wand.

IMPORTANT: HAVE YOUR DRAINS INSPECTED IF IT HAS BEEN A WHILE. THEN. TAKE THE TIME TO HAVE THEM CLEANED OUT.

Macomb County Tropical Smoothie Flooded by a baseball.

5/7/2021 (Permalink)

Blue Counter, Water, Hardwood Floor, mop, flood, glass wet. Lobby after the clean up. Tropical rains are unwelcome at Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

In a very busy business, it is extremely hard to take a loss on time. Tropical Smoothie Café is in high demand on a daily basis.

When this Macomb location was hit by a pouring down of water coming through the ceilings and light fixtures, it was considered an emergency to get this business up and running again.

The cause was a fire suppression system (one sprinkler) being hit by a baseball from an upstairs batting cage area.

Accidents really do happen and this one caused serious water to penetrate the floors into this business below.

Ceiling tiles needed to be removed that had water damage. SERVPRO technicians had to crawl into the space above the tiles to check for water and anything that was saturated as in insulation that would have to be pulled out and replaced.

All equipment was covered with large plastic rolls to ensure safety of electronics, refrigeration, and working spaces. The owners took every safety precaution and had our crew throw away all products that was exposed to the initial situation even if it was not affected.

SERVPRO efficiently dried all areas with our equipment in a timely fashion and Tropical was open within a few days to service the public that counts on this business as a chosen favorite!

Restoring is the Ultimate Goal.

Commercial bathroom, plastic, SERVPRO green machine, cut in wall, area contained. Ducting and Containing in a Commercial Facility Bathroom.

In this Commercial Building Bathroom there was a major water leak that come through the ceiling down into the walls, all stemming from a broken drinking fountain on the upper level.

As the water was pouring down into the walls the tile was also affected by the liquid. In aspiration to save the tiles and what is behind the walls SERVPRO performs a method which an AIR MOVER is used along with DUCTING and CONTAINMENT.

A COMMERICAL and INDUSTRIAL AIR MOVER is an essential part of water restoration. It is designed to provide rapid evaporation of any moisture in a wet structure.  In this specific situation the goal was to save the walls and tile, a plastic ducting was placed through a specific section of the wall that was cut out and placed inside that confined area.

Once in place, SERVPRO professionals are able to control dampness in spots that are hard to get to. Once this process has started a professional tech will monitor the equipment. Our technicians will then use a moisture meter to measure whether or not there is still moisture or if it has dried.

We are happy to say for the owner of this building the process worked.

A clean up of the bricks and all debris were separated and removed from the front of the building and off to the side for removal and for the owner to approve of anything that is restorable.

The cover up begins. Our SERVPRO team works together to put up temporary boarding to keep out the elements and anyone from getting hurt from any broken material. Our crew here at SERVPRO expects the unexpected. Our company is nationally recognized for our professionalism in the clean up industry.

Have you ever heard of a Fire Triangle? Along with a Fourth ingredient called Tetrahedron.

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

A 3 sided triangle with the 3 elements of a fire. Heat, Fuel, Oxygen. "The Three Elements of the Fire Triangle"

Let’s take a look at the three (representation of the triangle) elements that are in fact the reason for a blaze to get started and out of control. Without the mixture of these components the fire can not survive.

*Heat

*Fuel

*Oxygen

Which = a firestorm.

The first facet is HEAT which may be the most essential, for without the high temperature fire can’t ignite.

The second is FUEL which is anything that can be a feeder such as wood, fabric, paper, chemicals. If there is no source. There is no fire.

The third is OXYGEN. Flames need this ingredient to start and continue to burn. In the case of a smaller fire, it’s suggested to use a fire extinguisher, dirt, sand, or a non flammable blanket or a cooling agent such as water to prohibit the release of oxygen.

The four sided geometric characterization is the fourth added component. Or “D” classification.

*Fire Tetrahedron

This = Chemical Reaction

These fires involve metals.

*Magnesium

*Titanium

*Lithium

In this situation water will only magnify this combination. Firefighters need to use an agent such as sand to suffocate the flames.

Fire can be one of the most devastating scenarios one can encounter. Being aware of our daily habits and continual safety practices we can avoid such a tragedy.

*TIPS*

Don't walk away from your stove when cooking.

Any electrical outlets that are showing wear should be replaced.

Unplug all small appliances, curling irons or the like when not in use.

Only burn candles in rooms you are in and blow them out when feeling tired before you fall asleep.

Smoking and ashtrays should stay outside in the open area. (They are stinky!)

SERVPRO is the company with the experts in fire restoration. With over 1,800 locations across the US.  SERVPRO will be there in your time of need.

Stay safe.

Winter Weather can cause Ice Dams. You may ask. What is an Ice Dam? Is it serious?

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

Yes. It can be very serious. As beautiful as the snow can be with the look of icicles hanging on the edge of the rooftop like crystals from a chandelier, this beauty can be deceiving and cause mega damage.

~Ice Dams are the cause of an accumulation of snow on your rooftop that begins to melt due to the warm air in the attic of a home or commercial structure.

As the snow melts the water runs to the colder edges which are your eaves and gutters and forms large chucks of ice. As the snow and ice continues to melt the water can seep under your shingles and travel.

Water having no where to go could end up in your walls, attic and ceilings.

Signs to look for would be sagging drywall or ceiling. Peeling paint. Spots around your doors or windows. Or an area that is starting to look unsafe. Water can cause wood to rot. Use your nose. If you experience an odor along with this scenario you can be sure mold is beginning to set in.

All seasons have challenges when it come to the elements of nature.

Here are some suggestions that may help prevent ice dams from effecting your abode.

  1. Shingles that are damaged or worn should be replaced.
  2. Gutters that are filled should be emptied.
  3. If you or someone you know can safely get to the top of the build and use a roof rake to remove the snow would greatly help.
  4. Heat cables are also an option as a preventative precaution to very cold temperatures and fallen snow.

If you are unsure whether or not you have an Ice Damn that is cause for concern at your residence or business, call your local SERVPRO.

TAKE NOTE: THERE ARE SOME MYTHS ABOUT MOLD

1/28/2021 (Permalink)

TAKE NOTE: THERE ARE SOME MYTHS ABOUT MOLD

As with many conversations one person’s personal experience speaking to another person can lead to misconceptions about what some may believe are facts. Let us go over a few of these untruths so you can understand exactly what you need to do for your situation. It is very important that you contact a MOLD REMEDIATION EXPERT if you suspect you have mold in your home or business.

*Bleach will eradicate the mold.

Unfortunately, this is false. We want to eliminate the source of the mold. Not just kill it. Wiping or spraying the surface with bleach does not take it away. Many surfaces have porosity that mold can hide in. High exposure to bleach can also be harmful. Chemicals that get into the air could undeniably cause health issues such as, trouble breathing among other symptoms. Getting to the inside of that surface by way of special products by a professional company that has knowledge and experience is the safest way to put an end to mold all together.

*Mold takes its good old time to grow.

This could not be farther from the truth. In all actuality, mold can grow within 24 to 48 hours after exposure of a water disaster, sewage back up or any moisture in hidden areas. The sooner you call an expert, the less chance the mold has time to spread. This time frame is crucial.

*IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR MOLD TO GROW AFTER I DRY OUT THE SPACE.

Mold is tricky to say the least. It is imperative to understand that mold can become dormant even after drying that area. Waiting for the right environment to grow again. As mold becomes resilient the possibility of it breaking can spread through your HVAC system and can become airborne to your surroundings. Dormant mold should be concerning to any homeowner or business. People with allergies are particularly susceptible to undesirable reactions.

*FINAL WORDS.

A good analogy regarding mold is similar in how a tree, flower, bush, fruit, vegetables grow. If any of these comparisons are causing an area to be compromised in any way, it is best to pull them out by the ultimate source. The roots.

Why you should Always Use A Certified Restoration Company

10/7/2020 (Permalink)

Puddle of water by SERVPRO logo Water and Mold should always be handled by a Certified Firm like SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale.

A water damage restoration service is the kind of professional that no one wants to call, but when they are needed, it is important not to delay. Homeowners know that moisture is often the enemy, capable of penetrating into just about any space and taking advantage of every little crack and a structural problem. No matter how moisture gets into the building, the response should be the same. Bring in a certified firm like SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale as soon as possible to clean the home, dry it, and ensure there are no lingering health threats once the moisture is gone.

Floods and sewage backflows contain a cocktail of deadly bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and even momentary skin contact can leave a person seriously ill. SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale not only has the tools to eliminate the moisture, but they also have the protective equipment to remain free from harm.

SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale restoration technicians has a lot of technology at their disposal. This is the only way to ensure a home is safe to live, and a business safe to work in; any other cleaning method is a dangerous gamble.

Festivities for Fall 2020

SERVPRO logo Here to help SERVPRO Of Oak Park/Ferndale is ready for you!

Fall is finally here! Let the festivities begin

With the cool air around the corner, SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale would like to warm you up with a delicious apple pie recipe. Sure to make your home smell delicious and kick off the holiday season.

Ingredients:

  • Pastry for double pie crust
  • 8 large apples (about 8-10 cups of apple slices or at least 4 pounds)
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Saigon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 tablespoons coarse sugar

Instructions

Peel, core, and slice the apples thinly. Place them in a large saucepan. Sprinkle the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice over the apples. Cook over medium-low heat just until the apples start to soften, about 10-15 minutes. Stir several times during cooking. Spray a deep dish 9” pie plate with cooking spray. Place a rolled pastry dough on the bottom of the pie plate. Trim any excess dough, keeping the dough even with the edge of the pie plate.
Pour the warm apple mixture into the pie plate. Press down on the apples so that they lay flat and don’t have much space between them. This gives a nice, thick pie! Dot the top of the apples with the butter. Place the second pastry over the apples. Use a knife to trim any excess pie crust, leaving enough dough to tuck the top crust under the bottom crust. Flute the edges of the pie crust to seal. Cut slits in the top of the pie crust or use the tins of a fork to make the letter “A” on top. Use a pastry brush to brush milk overtop the pie crust, which will give the crust a shine. Sprinkle coarse sugar on top of the pie crust. Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are soft. If the crust is browning before you think the apples are softened, cover the edges with foil. Allow cooling to room temperature before slicing. Store in an airtight container.

Enjoy!

MOLD REMEDIATION-

If you have mold in your home or business, SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale specializes in mold remediation. We can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any source of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Does Your Metro Detroit Home Have A Mold Problem?

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

Mold growing on a wall If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale to assess the situation.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Salsa The SERVPRO Office Kitty~

10/4/2019 (Permalink)

Cat laying on a desk. Salsa is always happy to see her family~

The crew here at SERVPRO Oak Park/Ferndale would like to give recognition to a very important member of our SERVPRO family. Our rescue kitty Salsa.

In the cold months of January 2018, our crew was dispatched to a home for frozen pipes that had burst. This affected 3 levels of the home. Our team tackled water and mold for almost 21 days. Little did we know, Salsa was hiding there the whole time. When the home was down to the studs, she finally came out of hiding. This home had been abandoned by its tenants, who left her behind! The frail kitty made her debut when owner Carrie Fanelli was onsite doing an inspection. The lack of food and water left Salsa emaciated. She was brought back to the office that day and medically treated. Our SERVPRO staff showered her with love and nursed her back to health.

Today Salsa can be found sprawled out on owner Paul Fanelli's desk, getting a quick belly rub. Or begging for love from the Fire Chief. This miracle cat has stolen everyone's heart, there is no doubt where she belongs.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

A pink tree with breast cancer awareness ribbons. October is for Pink!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2019 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. as well as 62,930 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in American women, except for skin cancers.

A mammogram can often show a breast lump before it is felt. They can also show tiny clusters of calcium called micro-calcifications. Lumps or specks can be caused by cancer, fatty cells, or other conditions like cysts. Further tests are needed to find out if abnormal cells are present.

Help Support the women in need. We can provide help and hope to women at every step of the breast cancer journey. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, your donation will help provide a mammogram. Many women cannot afford their annual mammograms, and your support is the way for these women to get the important screening they need. https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/

Fire Safety Tips for Children

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

House fires are a tragic event we hope never happens, however if it ever did safety is the first priority. As an adult we have a key understanding on what to do if a fire did happen, something that was taught to us at one point. Making sure you teach those safety tips to any children in your home is very important. Children under the age of five are twice as likely to die in a house fire than any other age. Teaching fire safety at a very young age to a child, and keeping it refreshed in their memory is just the key to hopefully avoiding a tragedy like that from happening. Here are some tips you should remember to teach your children about fire safety if an emergency ever occurred.

-Always teach your children that fire is not a toy, and it is something they should never play with. This goes for matches, lighters, stove-tops, candles, etc.

-Make sure every floor of your home has a smoke detector. You should also teach your kids the sound it makes. That way if it ever went off they know that sound indicates an emergency.

-Sit down with the kids and come up with a family fire safety plan together. Including what to do if you hear the smoke detector go off, different ways to get out of the home, and where to go once out of the house.

-Always practice the fire safety plan your family comes up with. Do test runs showing your children exactly what to do.Showing them all the different ways of getting out the home. Make sure they can easily open windows, and screens if necessary. Also practicing where to go for your meet up location.

-Remember to teach your children safety tips for a fire. Including how to correctly check to see if a door is hot. Letting them know to always stay low to the ground if smoke is entering a room, and to stop, drop, and roll if clothing catches on fire.

-Teach your children that even though it is an emergency try not to panic. Never run and hide if you hear a smoke alarm, and to let them know their main goal is to get out of the home. This is why practicing your fire safety plan as much as you can will make the child feel more comfortable ,and secure on what to do during an emergency.

- Lastly make sure your children know 9-1-1, and to always utilize it for help during an emergency.

It is estimated by the U.S Fire Administration that 300 people are killed, and $280 million in property is destroyed each year from children playing with fire. Talking with your children, and letting them know the dangers of fire can help try and avoid these tragedies from happening.

Mold Prevention

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to mold there is a love hate relationship between mold and humans. Some examples of the good that comes from mold are it makes penicillin and brie. It also is what causes the decomposition of organic matter in nature. However mold can be harmful to us, and those harmful molds can grow undetected in your home or business. Controlling moisture in your home of business is the main factor in preventing mold growth. Here are some ways to try and control moisture indoors.

Find The Problem Area's and Fix Them

Mold spores are always in the air both inside and outside your home. It is impossible to completely mold proof a home or business, but you can make it mold resistant. Be aware of the home, and take notice of anything that can cause moisture or has moisture. Check windows for frequent condensation or leaks. Check ceilings or walls for water leaks, or making sure the basement does not flood during storms or rain fall. Whatever the problem is always make sure you address it right away and fix the issue.

Tackle Wet Areas Right Away

If you experience any type of leak, flooding, or even a spill never let it go unnoticed thinking it'll dry on its own in time. Anything wet should be dried right away within 24 hours. Even wet clothes left in a washing machine can start to grow mold quickly. Take the extra time to dry anything wet the right way.

Proper Ventilation

Always make sure you have the proper ventilation for your home or business. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms are examples of high moisture area's that need ventilation. Also make sure the ventilation is going to the outside of the home, and not into an attic. Opening a window, or running an exhaust fan while cooking, or showering can help vent out moisture.

Use Mold Resistant Products

Using mold resistant products like mold resistant drywall or sheetrock can be a big help in preventing mold. They also have mold inhibitors you can mix into paint. Mold resistant drywall is covered in fiberglass making it water resistant. This is especially usefully in area's with high moisture such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements.

Humidity Monitoring

Indoor humidity should always stay between 30-60 percent. To find out the humidity in your home you can purchase a moisture meter from local hardware stores that will monitor the humidity. High humidity can also be detected in your home from signs like condensation on windows, walls, or even piping. Also dry any condensation you notice, and address the problem immediately.

Checking Exterior of Home

Checking the interior of the home is a must in mold prevention, and so is checking the exterior. Make sure there are no loose of moved shingles on the roof. Inspect gutters to make sure nothing is damaged, full, or leaking. Having gutters cleaned regularly, and repairing any problems right away is a must. Also keep an eye out for wet stains inside the home after rainfall or storms.

Create Good Airflow in Home

When temperatures drop the air holds less moisture. If good air circulation isn't present excess moisture can appear on walls, floors, and windows. You can increase circulation by opening doors between rooms, opening windows, or using air movers/fans. Letting fresh air in reduces moisture and keeps mold at bay.

Keeping House Plants Mold Free

Moist soil in indoor house plants is the perfect growing spot for mold. Adding a bit of Taheebo tea to the water while watering your plants can help stop mold in the soil. This tea can be found in most natural food stores

Keeping your Commercial Building Maintain from Water Damage

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage in a commercial building can be a terrible thing. Even a minor water leak can cause extensive damage to a commercial building. With heavy use of bathrooms, and kitchens commercial buildings are put under more stress then a home. Remembering to keep regular maintenance on these 3 key area's will help in preventing a water loss at your business.

1.Maintaining the Kitchen

Kitchens are often the main hangout for employees during breaks, lunches, or even to go get some coffee during their long day. The kitchen has many different things that can cause water damage to occur. For instances appliances like the fridge/ice maker. You should always make sure they are working properly, Always check the faucet to make sure there are no leaks, seals leaking, or other faucet components leaking. Always check for leaks from piping under the sink, and also make sure it is clear and cluttered free. Also take care of any slow draining if that problem occurs in the sink.

2.Bathroom Maintaining

Check the bathroom often is a very huge deal in a commercial building. Bathrooms are not only used by the many staff inside a commercial building, but it is also used by visitors and customers. For example you could of had a customer who overflowed a toilet, but they were too embarrassed to tell anyone. Checking the bathroom often could help catch the water overflow, and contain it before it reached outside of the bathroom. Also do routine checks of the toilet and sinks. Flush toilets to make sure nothing is leaking, and that everything is in tact on the toilet. Check faucets for leaks, and making sure the sink is draining properly.

3.Maintaining the Building

Although a lot of water use is done inside the building, making sure everything is good outside the building is a must also. Routinely walk the exterior of your building making notes of anything that needs repairing.Major water damage can happen from a bad roof, or even a cracked/broken window. The longer you wait to fix a water damage issue, the more of a problem it becomes.

Fires happen in commercial buildings more often than people think. Electrical fires, misuse of equipment, and smoking to name a few of some common commercial fire causes. Being prepared and having a plan in case of the worse is something you should always have. Here is some basic pointers on doing just that.

Fire Prevention Systems

Fire alarms, extinguishers, and sprinkler systems are all great fire prevention systems. Fire alarms are very important to have, and to make sure they are maintained. Fire alarms can be the first  point of contact with fire/smoke. You should always test the fire alarms regular, and make sure they care working properly. Extinguishers, an fire sprinkler systems are also two great things to have. Both fire extinguishers, and fire sprinkler systems can stop a fire before it starts.

Evacuation

Having a evacuation plan in case of an emergency is a must have. If the fire alarm went off everybody in the building should have a clear indication on where they should go to exit. Always take the time to properly educate all staff members on exits, and meet up locations once outside of the building. Also always make sure the exits have a clear path, and nothing is blocking them.

Exit Signs & Lighting

Making sure everyone in the building can leave the building safely is important. Every exit door should have a clear exit sign. They should always be visible from any angle of the room. Emergency lighting systems are also very important in case of a fire. The building can experience a power outage, and keeping everyone calm, safe, and able to see is key.Emergency lights are a battery-backed lighting system that comes on the moment a building loses power. Nobody should struggle to safely exit a building in case of a fire.

Storm Tips

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

Storms happen no matter where you live. Some can be the same routine storms we get every year, but sometimes we can get dangerous ones that cause serious issues. You should always be prepared for when a big storm hits. Here are some tips on how to do just that.

-Keep a battery powered radio with new batteries in your home. If the electricity goes out you want to be able to tune into the radio stations to get updates.

-Every floor of your home should have an accessible flashlight. Make sure to also keep keep fresh/extra batteries with the flashlights.

-Always keep a supply of candles for power outages.

-If living in a frequent storm area take extra precaution when it comes to your roof. Nail down or use adhesive on shingles to keep the shingles from blowing off or turning.

-Trees can be a big threat during a storm even healthy trees. Cut them back if necessary to avoid damage to your house if it were to fall.

-If you live in a hurricane prone area never leave the home during the storm. Always remember to seek high ground if flooding occurs.

-When warnings of a major storm arise you should always close shutters, board windows, or tape the inside of larger panes with an X. This will try and give the windows extra strength not to crack.

-Tornado's are opposite when it comes to the windows. You should leave windows slightly open if there is a tornado threat.

-The best shelter for a tornado is under ground. The basement can work, but you should stay away from gas pipes, and sewage pipes.

Water Damage VS Flood Damage Coverage: Knowing the Difference

7/18/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to getting insurance for your home or business researching and knowing everything about a policy is key. One common mistake many homeowners tend to make is assuming flood damage is covered under their homeowners insurance. Your definition of a flood maybe different from the definition your insurance company considers a flood. The important thing to remember is that flood damage is NOT the same as water damage, and this especially goes when it comes to insurance purposes.

The Differences

Flooding by the National Flood Insurance Program is defined as: "A temporary rising of water on land that is normally dry, causing damage to two or more properties."

-Overflowing of a body of water

-A mudslide caused by heavy rains

-Heavy rains that soil cannot absorb quickly enough causing water to seep into the home

Those are all examples of how flooding can occur. Now lets talk about water damage. Typically water damage is covered under homeowners insurance(you should read and know your policy to determine what kind of water damage). Water damage to insurance companies means water damage that happened before the water came in contact with the ground. Such as:

-Heavy rains soak into your roof damaging ceilings, walls, and floors.

-A pipe bursts causing water to saturate the ceiling below

-A over flowing toilet soaking the bathroom and seeping into floorboards

-A window breaking from hail allowing water to get inside the home or window seal

Coverage

Water damage is covered by insurance companies when the home or business owner could not prevent the hazard. Flooding is a hazard we cannot control however the main difference is flooding is a hazard that comes from a natural source. Also keep in mind two or more properties need to be involved for insurance companies to cover a flood claim if you have flood insurance(If you and a neighbor are having flooding issues due to heavy rain then it is a flood claim). Always thoroughly review your insurance polices to know exactly what is and is not covered before any flood or water damage occurs. Keep in mind if you do need to purchase flood insurance most insurance policies require 30 days before it is active. If you know you are in a flood zone do not hesitate on flood insurance one day it could happen and its best to be prepared.

Storm Damage Handling

7/16/2018 (Permalink)

Major storms often bring violent weather, and with violent weather storm damage usually always occurs. Strong winds either from a storm or a tornado can cause chaos for a home or business owner. Knowing how to handle the situation if storm damage happens to your home or business could mean everything. It also helps when it comes to protecting not only your belongings, but your safety and the safety of others.

Source

Storm damage can occur from a number of different things. Strong winds can cause shingles or tiles on roofs to become loose. Strong winds can uplift trees, or other objects that can be tossed on a roof causing impact. Wind is also but not always associated with rain. This is where the big issue lies when any type of damage is done to a roof. When dealing with a damaged roof this allows water or moisture to get inside of the home. This will cause damage to ceilings, walls, and even worse cause the potential for mold growth. Hail during a storm can also cause significant damage to a roof. Lightening is another one that can cause major damage to a home or business. It can cause branches to break off of trees, cause windows to shattered if hit, and also can start a fire.

**Handling the Issue**

Any type of damage to a home or business can be very overwhelming for anyone. Calling a professional restoration company such as SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale will help with acting quickly on getting the problem solves, and minimize the impact the damage has on your home or business.

**Safety**

First thing a home or business owner should do is make sure the power to the home or business is shut off. Storm water can soak into walls reaching electrical wiring. This also could be done with the water supply if any pipes are broken, and or the sewage system is plugged/backed up.

**Assessing Damage**

This is where a professional restoration company comes into play. Our trained experts will do an examination of the home or business. We thoroughly check the properties interior and the exterior. We will work with your insurance company by taking photo's of the damage for insurance purposes, and following insurance polices.

**Roof Repairs**

Roofs are always hit the hardest when a storm rolls thru. Water damage can happen quickly whenever a roof is in need of repair. The roof will be inspected and repaired immediately in order to stop anymore water damage from occurring.

**The Clean Up*

Once the roof is taken care of temporary or permanently the clean up can start to happen. When cleaning up water we make sure every inch is dry using our professional expertise. We will pick the right equipment needed to get the job done. Whether it is using vacuums and pumps to remove the water, dehumidifiers and air movers to stop mold and mildew before it even happens, to generators if needed to operate our equipment. Cooking Fires

7/11/2018 (Permalink)

Cooking fires have become the leading cause of house fires today. It also is the #1 cause of home fire injuries due to victims trying to fight the fire themselves. Here are some safety cooking tips on how to avoid cooking fires.

Never Leave Cooking Unattended

Leaving food cooking unattended either on the stove, oven, or broiler is the most common occurrence of cooking fires. If you have to leave the kitchen for any reason you should always turn off the oven, broiler, and the stove. It is also a great precaution to remove any pots and pans from the heat.

Clothing

Loose clothing, flowing sleeves, and even aprons can catch fire while cooking. If you must wear an apron make sure it is a well fitted apron.

Keep away flammable objects

Many things can easily catch fire if near a hot burner. Oven mitts, food packaging, towels, paper or plastic items, etc. Always remove any flammable items away from the stove top, or any other appliance in the kitchen that produces heat.

Fire Extinguisher

You should always have a fire extinguisher handy in case a fire does break out. If you have never used one most fire departments will assist you on how to properly use one in case of an emergency.

Grease

Grease/Oil are a common flammable substance that is used a lot in cooking. Weather we are cooking food with it, or the food we are cooking produces it, grease and fire are a dangerous combination. Always make sure the stove is cleaned regularly of grease. Never cook oil/grease at a temp higher than their smoking point(450 degrees for oil, 375 degrees for lard/fat). Even if the grease isn't on fire always wait for it to cool before disposing of the grease.

Double Check

You should always do a double check of the kitchen either once your done cooking, before bed, or leaving your home. Always make sure the stove, oven, broiler, and any appliances in the kitchen are all shut off.

Be Prepared

You should always be prepared to put out a fire if one happens. If it occurs in a pan of pot you should carefully smother it with a tight fitting lid. Never use water to put out a grease/oil fire. Lastly flour does not put out a fire flour can actually burn, and it makes a huge mess if you attempt it.

Practicing fire precautions are a big must for safety when it comes to you and your family. Always make sure smoke detectors are working properly, and have fresh batteries. always come up with a plan with the family and children in case a fire breaks out. Also always remember to stop, drop, and roll if clothing catches on fire. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to home fires.

Severe Weather and the Different Floods Associated With It

7/6/2018 (Permalink)

Severe Weather happens no matter where you are from. One major issue severe weather can bring is flooding. Did you know floods have became one of the top natural disasters right behind tornadoes? Floods have not only caused a lot of property damage in the United States, but it has also caused a lot of lives to be lost. Some regions experience these types of different flooding more than others. However at least one of these could happen even in the city you live in.

Coastal Flood

If you live in a state that has a coast boarding the ocean this more than likely has happened a time or two. Tropical storms, hurricanes, and tsunamis are usually associated with causing this type of flooding to occur. Coastal floods are caused by higher than average tides. Onshore winds and heavy rainfall cause the tides to worsen. In a hurricane 9 out of 10 deaths are caused by the fast moving waters these coastal floods produce and bring onshore.

River Floods

Yup you guessed it! A river flood happens when a river overflows. A lot of rain in one place can cause this to happen. Along with tropical storms or hurricanes dumping its contents quickly, or even when the we get a big snow fall all winter and it finally melts.

Inland Flood

Inland floods are very similar to river floods. In fact river floods can actually cause inland floods to occur. Inland flooding happens when the soil becomes to saturated that it cannot hold anymore rain. Steady rain over a prolonged time or heavy precipitation in a short period of time can cause this problem. Any area can be affected to this type of flooding.

Flash Flood

Flash flooding is usually described as a heavy amount of rainfall happening over a period of time. Usually can be up to 6 hours. Flash floods can rip through mountain canyons, urban streets, and river bends sweeping up everything along the way. Flash floods in some cases don't even need heavy rain pour to happen. It can happen from any sudden release of water like the breaking up of an ice dam, or a dam failure.

If you ever caught in flood warning territories there are a few things you can do to try and stay safe.

  • Make sure to pay attention to the radio or television about the flood
  • Put together an emergency kit and make plans with you family on what to do
  • Avoid contact with flood water it maybe contaminated with sewage, oil, gasoline, ect
  • Move important items to higher ground
  • Never build structures in a flood plain
  • If you have time turn off and unplug utilities and electrical appliances

Mold: Recognizing, Causes, and Solutions

7/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a problem that everyone comes encountered with. Anywhere from finding moldy food that has been sitting to long in the fridge. To fuzzy black growth you find on shower tiles, and wet window sills. Mold is found in our environment outside, along with inside of our home. Mold spores are always floating in the air around us. The spores are typically inactive normally not causing problems. However with the right temperatures, dampness, and food these spores can attach and start to grow into the mold we see.

Recognizing

Mold when active can vary in different colors such as black, green, orange, and even purple. Mold is slimy and fuzzy in most cases, but some can have different textures such as being fine and powdery, resembling cotton, or leather etc. One of the most common ways of spotting a mold issue before seeing mold is by the smell. Mold odor has a distinct smell of being damp/musty. More than often the moldy smell is the only lead you have on a mold issue. Even if you don't see any mold do not ignore the odor. Sometimes the issue could be hidden turning into a bigger issue of a mold colony growing.

Causes

Oxygen, food source, and optimal growing conditions are 3 of the 4 things mold needs to grow. The 4th key ingredient mold needs in order to start forming is a moisture source. Dampness, wet spots, or water damage are a few examples of a moisture problem, and when these problems occur mold most likely will follow. Surface abnormalities such as bubbling, cracking, peeling of paint or wallpaper, walls bulging/warped, or walls feeling damp are all signs of a moisture problem. Before assessing and removing mold you have to make sure the source of the problem is located and fixed. Otherwise it will be a constant battle of mold regrowth, and costing you a pretty penny along the way.

Solutions

The removal of mold is something that needs to be done correctly. If not the mold will come back, and in some instances worse than before. If the mold is 10 square feet or less you maybe able to clean it yourself. Anything larger than that you should seek a mold remediation professional. Bleach is okay to use when getting rid of mold when it comes to tiles. Bleach should not be used on wood, drywall, paint, wallpaper, etc. These type of materials should be completely removed when mold has been detected. When cleaning/removing mold you should always wear the correct personal protection equipment(gloves, respirator/mask, goggles, ect). Make sure the area you clean is dried thoroughly, after all moisture is the reason the mold began to grow in the first place.

Mold is an issue that shouldn't be taken lightly. It can cause health issues, and make existing health issues worse. Mold is a manageable problem if addressed properly. Don't ever try to take the cheap or easy way out when it comes to removing mold. In most cases this just makes the issue worse, and your home is a sacred  investment that should be taken of properly.

Water Damage and the effects it has on you and your home.

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage is a dilemma we hope never happens to us, but if it does it is a problem you shouldn't take lightly. A water loss can cost homeowners thousands of dollars in damages if not taken care of timely and properly. This can cause a bigger costly problem down the road with the risk of mold growth and mold remediation.

Water Loss Causes

Broken pipes, Clogged toilets, over flowing washing machines, to leaky roofs and foundation problems are just some examples of water damage causing problems. Water can cause major damages to appliances, upholstery, plumbing, house hold items, and more. Starting water remediation right away if a water loss occurs with a team of professionals can help to try and minimize these problems, and increase the potential of saving these house hold items.

Water Damage Hazards

Water clean up right away is very essential in the saving of our hard earned processions, however there is a major underline issue of why immediate water extract and clean up are important. This issue is to try to prevent/stop the growth of mold, and any other organisms that can grow. Mold growth exposure can cause many health hazards especially in young children, or people with immune deficiencies. Mold exposure can also cause risk for those with medical issues such as respiratory diseases, along with aggravating allergy and asthma symptoms.

Tips on Keeping Safe During a House Fire

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

House fires are a tragedy that could happen at any moment. Knowing how to stay safe during this time helps with the chances of survival for you and your loved ones. One of the biggest things to remember if a fire is to strike is timing is everything. Remember to stay calm, and focus on these key tips.

Tip #1- React

Smoke detectors/alarms are a safety feature in homes to help detect a fire if we are unable too. Your main concern if your smoke alarm goes off is to get out of the home as fast as you can. If it happens while everyone is asleep you should yell as loud as you can to wake everyone in the home up. Also remember to contact 911 right away if you are able too.

Tip #2- Exiting

Before running out of any door to safety, you should stop and pay attention to what is going on first. Fire brings smoke which is very toxic when inhaled into the body. If you notice smoke coming from under the door the fire could be closer than you think.Keep the door shut if smoke from under the door is occurring. If smoke is not noticeable yet always place the back of your hand on the door/door knob to make sure it isn't hot. If the door/knob is cool to the touch you can slowly open the door to pass through if the coast is clear to any visible fire. If a door is open and you see fire that is stopping you from leaving the room, make sure to close the door to protect yourself. (If the door has smoke coming from under it, and the door is to hot to pass through a window is the best escape option if one is accessible. Be careful at the same time whenever having to use a window to escape from a fire).

Tip #3- Smoke Inhalition

As pointed out before the inhaling of smoke is very toxic to our bodies. Smoke inhalation can cause a person to become very weak, disorientated, and can even put you in a deep unconscious sleep. Smoke always tends to rise at first so make sure to get low to the ground. Always crouch, or crawl if smoke becomes visible in the room you are in. You should also cover your mouth and nose if you must walk through a smoked filled room. If you are able place a shirt or a wet rag over the nose and mouth, but only if you have these items close by should you worry about doing that.

Tip #4- Trapped Safety

If you find yourself in a position that you are unable to get to safety don't panic. While waiting for help the first thing you should do is try to minimize the amount of smoke coming into the room. Close any doors and try to cover any cracks or vents with cloth or tape to help slow down the smoke from coming in. Your first instinct maybe to open a window if one is present, however fresh oxygen draws a fire in. Make sure to keep any windows closed if you are not able to escape from it. It may seem scary if you are on a second story floor or higher, but if your able to fit thru a window and some how jump to safety it is worth a try. If there is a ledge you could even try to dangle your body down to try and get as close to the ground as possible before letting go.

Tip #5- After Exiting the House

Once you have gotten yourself to safety the first thing you should do if you haven't already is call 911. Next thing is to do a head count of the people who were in the home. Only re-enter the home or building if it is safe. Otherwise notify the first responders right away if someone is missing. While waiting for the first responders you should check yourself and other for any injuries. If any injuries have occurred do what you can until help arrives. Lastly you should always keep your distance from the structure on fire once out to safety.

You cant always prevent fires from happening, but you can always come up with ways to try and keep your family safe and informed if a tragedy like this occurs. Always come up with two escape routes per room, and practice with the family and small children to show them where they can escape in a time of crisis. Make sure smoke detectors/alarms are always working properly, and always have fresh batteries. Show everyone in the home especially small children how to open and close any windows in the house in case of an emergency. Most importantly practice fire safety. Always let children know fire is not a toy or a game. Always pay attention while cooking, and never leave candles unattended, etc. Also always remember to stop, drop, and roll if you catch on fire at anytime.

Frozen Pipes, how to prevent and how to deal

12/1/2017 (Permalink)

What is worse than a major home maintenance disaster? Try several major home maintenance disasters… at once. When a house’s water pipes freeze, the situation is not as simple as calling a plumber, an 1/8-inch crack in a pipe can spew up to 250 gallons of water a day, causing flooding, serious structural damage, and the immediate potential for mold.

Frozen water pipes are a problem in both cold and warmer climates, affecting quarter-million families each winter, and it can happen in homes with both plastic and copper pipes. It’s all too common, especially considering this damage is largely preventable.

In addition to taking the usual preventive precautions, here are a few steps you can take to keep your pipes from turning frigid nights into inconvenient, and expensive ordeals.

Before winter arrives

The three central causes of frozen pipes are quick drops in temperature, poor insulation, and thermostats set too low. You can prepare you home during the warmer months.

  • Insulate pipes in your home’s crawl spaces and attic, even if you live in a climate where freezing is uncommon. Exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing. Remember, the more insulation you use, the better protected your pipes will be.
  • Heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes. Be sure to use products approved by an independent testing organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories Inc. and only for the use intended (exterior or interior). Closely follow all manufacturers’ installation and operation instructions.
  • Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located. Look for air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes, and use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out. With severe cold, even a tiny opening can let in enough cold air to cause the pipe to freeze.
  • Before winter hits, disconnect garden hoses and, if possible, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house.

When the mercury plummets

Even if you’ve taken the right preventative steps, extreme weather conditions can still harm your pipes. Here are a few more steps you can take:

  • A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.
  • Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night. You might be in the habit of turning down the heat when you’re asleep, but further drops in the temperature – more common overnight – could catch you off guard and freeze your pipes.
  • Open cabinet doors to allow heat to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.

Before you skip town

Travelling in the winter months might be good for the soul, but don’t forget to think about your pipes before you leave. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Set the thermostat in your house no lower than 55°F (12°C)
  • Ask a friend to check on your house daily to make sure it’s warm enough to prevent freezing.
  • Shut off and drain the water system (winterize).

If your pipes do freeze

What if your pipes still freeze, despite your best preventive measures? First step: Don’t panic. Just because they are frozen doesn’t mean they’ve already burst. Here’s what you can do:

  • If you turn on your faucet and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber.
  • Don’t not use electrical appliances in areas of standing water. You could be electrocuted.
  • Never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flam because it could cause a fire hazard. Water damage is preferable to burning down your house!!
  • You may be able to thaw a frozen pipe with a hair dryer. Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, warming toward the coldest section of pipe.
  • If your water pipes have already burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house; leave the water faucets turned on. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the water shutoff valve is and how to open and close it.

Grilling safety tips

6/22/2017 (Permalink)

Fire in the grill, under hot dogs and burgers, is a welcome sight at the family cookout. But fire anywhere else can make your summer kick-off barbecue memorable for all the wrong reasons. With approximately 8,900 fires started by grills each year, SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale doesn’t want your summer to be ruined by one as well. To keep you and your family safe while grilling, follow these general guidelines.

General grilling tips

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

Propane grills

Before you use your grill:

  • Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose.
  • Check the gas (propane) tank hose for the potential (gas) leaks. To do that:
    • Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle.
    • Turn the propane tank on. If there is a gas leak, the propane will release bubbles around the hose (big enough to see).
    • If there are no bubbles, your grill is safe to use.
  • If there are bubbles, turn off the tank and check connections, then have your grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
  • If the leak doesn’t stop, call the fire department immediately.

When the grill is on:

  • As you are cooking, if you smell gas, turn off the gas tank and burners.
  • If the leak stops immediately, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
  • If the smell continues, move away from the grill and call the fire department immediately. Do not move the grill.

Charcoal grills

  • There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Of course, accidents do happen, no matter what. If you do find yourself the victim of a grill fire and in need of help, contact us at 248-246-0790, 24/7, 365. The sooner you call us, the sooner we will get your summer back to sunshine, family fun-days, and backyard barbecues, “Like it never even happened.”

6/9/2017 (Permalink)

With the Fourth of July holiday just around the corner, it’s time to start planning and lining up the fun and entertainment. Many of us Michiganders will be lighting off fireworks in tradition and celebration of our country’s independence. In 2012, Michigan enacted a new firework law, allowing for state residents to purchase and operate bigger fireworks, year-round. Consumer-grade fireworks are now legal for purchase from state-authorized retailers, and must meet Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. This genre includes roman candles, bottle rockets, aerials, missile-type rockets, and reloadable shell devices. With these this new law comes more need for added safety to discharge these larger fireworks. Not only is there a heightened risk for bodily injury, with approximately 8,600 injuries caused by fireworks each year and 10-12 deaths, but fireworks are also responsible for over 2,000 reported structure and vehicle fires. It is important to know and practice firework safety, not only for yourself, but for your audience and guests, as well as your neighbors and all the personal property surrounding the ignition and viewing area. SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale is dedicated to keeping you informed and offering way to protect not only your home, but your family as well.

If you plan on entertaining with fireworks this upcoming Independence Day, SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale recommends that you follow this fireworks safety tips:

  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance description prior to igniting.
  • Know and obey all your local laws and ordinances regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from building and vehicles, as well as overhanging trees.
  • A responsible adult should always supervise all firework activities.
  • Children should never handle fireworks, even sparklers. Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle fireworks, under close adult supervision.
  • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
  • Be careful when lighting the fuse. Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then quickly back up to a safe distance.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework. Don’t try to pick it up right away either. Wait at least 20 minutes then soak it in a bucket if water.
  • Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby in case of a fire or other mishap. After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water, or place spend devices in a bucket of water for a few hours before discarding to prevent a trash fire.
  • Use Common Sense. Never point or throw fireworks at any living thing. Never carry them in your pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers. Wear safety glasses.
  • Alcohol and fireworks don’t mix. Have a “designated shooter.”

It's a Bird, it's a Plane, No, it's a HOUSE! How to Survive a Tornado

6/8/2017 (Permalink)

A Home Damaged by a Tornado in Lapeer, MI

Storm season is upon us and while we may not reside in “Tornado Alley,” Michigan still sees its fair share of tornadoes. Many of us have been bless to never have experienced an actual tornado, yet I’m sure we’ve all been under a tornado warning. Well we hope that none of you will be caught in one, SERVPRO wants to give you some tips and knowledge that can help save your life if you’re ever staring down a tornado.

TORNADO 101

First things first, what is a tornado and what causes them? A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which descends from a thunderstorm to the ground. No other weather phenomenon can match the fury and destructive power of a tornado. A tornado can destroy large buildings and lift 20-ton railroad cars right off the tracks. While scientist do not fully understand exactly how tornadoes are formed, they do know that a preceding supercell thunderstorm is needed. A supercell is an organized thunderstorm that contains very strong, rotating updraft. This rotation helps to produce severe weather events such as large hail, strong downbursts, and of course, tornadoes. Tornadoes form under a certain set of weather conditions in which three very different types of air need to come together in a specific way. It goes something like this:

Near the ground lies a layer of warm and humid air, along with strong south winds. Colder air and strong southwest winds lie in the atmosphere. Temperature and moisture differences between the surface and the upper levels create what is called instability, one of the necessary ingredient for tornado formation. Thank change in wind speed and the direction with height is known as wind shear. This is linked to the eventual development of rotation from which a tornado may form. A third layer of hot dry air becomes established between the warm, moist air at low levels and the cool, dry air upward. This hot layer acts as a cap and allows the warm air underneath to warm further, making the air even more unstable. Things start to happen when a storm system aloft moves east and begins to lift the various layers. Through this lifting process the cap is removed, in turn setting the stage for an explosive thunderstorm to develop as strong updrafts form. Complex interactions between the updraft and the surrounding winds may cause the updraft to begin rotating… and a tornado is born.

The Difference Between a Watch and A Warning

Your listening to the weather on the TV, your NOAA Weather Radio (don't got one? Get one!), or online. You hear that there’s a tornado watch/tornado warning. Do you know the difference? A tornado watch means that conditions are right for a tornado, and tornadoes are possible. This also means to remain alert and watch the sky. Watch for these danger signs that a tornado is immanent:

  • Dark, greenish sky
  • Large hail
  • A large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if its rotating)
  • A loud roar, similar to a freight train

If you are noticing any of these sign, you best take cover quickly. That brings us to a tornado warning. This means that a tornado has been spotted by a human eye or radar, and that it is moving towards you in the warning area. Take shelter immediately. Tornadoes are very unpredictable and just because it’s not on a bee-line course to you, doesn’t mean it won’t shift at any moment, change directions and end up in your backyard.

What to Do During a Tornado

So, a tornado warning has been issued and you’re directed to take cover immediately but you don’t know where to go for shelter… Here are the recommended safest places to go based on where you are:

  • A Mobile Home/Trailer: Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of any nearby building or storm shelter. Even if the mobile home is equipped with a tie-down system cannot withstand the force of a tornado’s winds.
  • A Vehicle: If you can safely drive away from tornado, please do so. If there’s a sturdy structure available, go inside, go to the lowest floor possible. If you don’t have time or not sure if you have time, or you’re not sure which way the tornado is moving, you can stay in the vehicle, park it but leaving it running so the airbags will work. The airbags and the frame can offer some amount of protection but this is not absolutely safe. The other option is to get out of the car and lay down inside a ditch. See more in “Outside with no Nearby Structure” for what to do here.
  • A Structure/Building: Seek shelter in the lowest level of the building (basement, storm cellar). Bring with you your NOAA Weather Radio, so you can get all alerts and updates. If there isn’t a lower level, go to the inner most room on the ground floor. Often a bathroom or laundry room can make a suitable shelter area because the water pipes reinforce the walls, providing a sturdier structure. Put as many walls between you and the outside and stay away from windows and doors. Get down on your knees and use your hands to protect your head and neck from any falling debris. You can cushion yourself with a mattress, but don’t cover yourself. Stay inside until the your certain that the storm had passed, as multiple tornadoes can emerge from the same storm.
  • Outside with No Nearby Structure: Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head and neck with your hands. If you were in a vehicle, make sure you are far enough away from the vehicle so that it doesn’t tumble unto you. Beware of potential flooding in the ditch you are occupying. Do not get under an overpass or bridge, this will increase your risk of injury. You are safer in a low, flat location. Be aware of flying debris, a tornado can pick up significantly large objects and turn them into missiles. Flying debris causes the most tornado deaths.

You Survived a Tornado, Now What??

After a tornado passes and you need to take some additional safety measures. Wait some additional time to be sure that there are no additional tornadoes coming your way. Be careful as you leave you shelter, there might be some unseen damage and debris waiting for you on the other side of the doors. If your home or business has been damaged in the tornado, walk carefully around the outside and check for any injured or trapped people, and check for things like loose power lines, gas leaks, and general structural damage. Leave the area if you smell gas or if there is floodwater around the building. Call your insurance agent and file a claim. Take photos of all the damaged areas to your home, business, and/or vehicles. Call SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale as well, 248.246.0790, we will be out to your home ASAP, usually within 2-4 hours, and we’ll begin emergency services right away as we wait to hear from the insurance company to confirm coverage and obtain approvals. If the destruction to your home or business is extensive, don’t freak out and panic. The American Red Cross and other volunteer agencies will arrive to your area with food and water, and to set up temporary housing and shelters. Regardless the amount of damage your home or business has suffered from this storm, SERVPRO can help. “We are faster to any size disaster!”

GOT MOLD!??

6/7/2017 (Permalink)

Mold in your home, school, or workplace is a serious concern for your health, since up to 40 percent of American Schools and 25 percent of homes have mod infestations. Mold can cause several serious health problems that you may not realize are related to mold exposure. SERVPRO wants you to be able recognize a mold problem as well as the symptoms of systemic mycotoxicosis (debilitating symptoms caused by mycotoxins.) Mycotoxicins are chemical toxins present within or on the surface of the mold spore, which you then unwittingly inhale, ingest, or touch. These mold toxins are extremely potent and can cause adverse health effects.

Mold’s Favorite Places in Your Home

Fungi grow by releasing reproductive cells (spores) into the air, just like plants reproduce by spreading seeds. These airborne spores are invisible to the naked eye; it is not uncommon to find hundreds or even thousands of mold spores per cubic foot of indoor airspace. Spore are extremely small. 20 million would fit on a single postage stamp. Spores can survive harsh environmental conditions. In fact, they can lie dormant for decades until favorable conditions all them to spring back to life.

Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, provided moisture and oxygen are present. The most common indoor places for mold to take hold are damp areas, such as:

  • Bathrooms and kitchens, especially under sinks – particularly leaking ones
  • Behind or under appliances that hide sloe plumbing leaks (refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, etc.)
  • Roof leaks
  • Around windows where condensation collects
  • High humidity areas for your home, such as basements

Often, the first sign of a mold problem is a “musty” odor. You are probably familiar with the smell of mildew-mildew is simply a variety of mold.

Know Your Molds

Mold is a type of fungus, like mushrooms and yeast. There are 100,000 to 400,000 types of fungi, with more than 1,000 types of mold that grow inside houses across America.

The five most common indoor mold varieties are:

  • Alternaria: Commonly found in your nose, mouth, and upper respiratory tract;
  • Aspergillus: Usually found in warm, extremely damp climates, and a common occupant house dust; produces mycotoxins;
  • Cladosporium: This very common outdoor fungus can find its way indoors to grow on textiles. Wood, and other damp, porous materials;
  • Penicillium: Very common species found on wallpaper, decaying fabrics, carpet, and fiberglass duct insulation; some species produce mycotoxins, one being the common antibiotic penicillin.
  • Chaetomium: Chaetomium is a dangerous mold that little about which is known. This species of mold is characterized by a strong musty odor while thriving in water damaged drywall. Exposure to chaetomium results in classic mold related symptoms
  • Stachybotrys: Extremely toxic “black Mold’ that produces mycotoxins that can cause serious health problems; thankfully, less common in homes that the other four, but not rare; found on wood or paper (cellulose products), but NOT on concrete, linoleum or tile.

Established That Mold Is a Problem

Mold spores are very difficult to destroy, even with cleaning agents, such as hot water or bleach (which is itself toxic). First and foremost, you want to get away from the problematic area – which means move if you have to. But come on, moving just isn’t an option for most. If you can’t move, there are some remedial steps you need to take to address the mold problem:

  • Get a high-quality air purifier to control mold toxins. In addition to the mold itself, you need to make sure you get rid of any mold toxins. When a mold breaks down, it disintegrates, and every little particle may contain mycotoxins that have the capability of making you very sick. One option is a photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) unit. These unit can cover the whole house (up to 3000SF), they require little maintenance, and are relatively inexpensive. Please understand, no air filter in the world will take care of a mold issue until you have the humidity under control and the mold has been properly cleaned from your home.
  • Get professional Mold Remediation. If your mold problem is sizable, or if you have black mold, your best bet is to hire a professional mold remediation company, like us here at SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale. Mold remediation is treaty and complicated and should always be done by a professional. Unless proper precautions are make, trying to remove black mold on your own is just as hazardous as doing nothing at all. Once mold is disturbed, spores are then stirred up and become airborne, affecting other areas that may not have been affected before. Professional mold remediation may not be cheap, but it is better than the alternative, and when it comes to your health, and the heath of your family, you can’t put a price on that.

When it comes to choosing a mold remediation company, it is always best to choose a contractor that is certified. SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale is an IICRC (Institution of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification) Certified firm. Our technicians are trained in the proper techniques to successfully remove mold from a home. We are also preferred contractors with several insurance companies, if the mold remediation is covered by your insurance.

The Process of Mold Remediation

Once an indoor air quality hygienist (IAQH) has completed the mold testing and verified the mold types, the severity of the infestation and what areas are affected, remediation can begin. It is important, depending on the severity of the mold, to consider relocating.  When remediation begins, the removal of drywall, carpet, wallpaper, etc. can release massive amounts of mold spores. While containment is set to contain the work area from the unaffected spaces, if that containment is breached, those spores will be released and will affected the remaining spaces. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) should always be worn while in the affected work area. This results in an exposure to a massive amount of spores all at once. This is especially dangerous when handling Stachybotrys or Chaetomium. Frequently, visible mold only accounts for a fraction of the actual mold infestation. Many species can penetrate beneath the surface, therefore making it nearly impossible to remediate without full removal and replacement. A dehumidifier is important to stabilize the environment and keeping the moisture level of the air at a minimum during the remediation. All affected materials should be removed; the remaining areas should be scrubbed clean with an antimicrobial solution and then sealed to prevent any re-infestations. Special equipment is placed in the affected areas to further remove any remain mold spores from the air. The area is to remain closed and contained until the IAQH has performed the post-test and the results confirm the area is clean and safe. Testing should always be performed by a third party to ensure the integrity of the results.

If you are experiences any of these listed health issues or expect that your home or place of business has mold, call us at 248-246-0790. We will walk to through this process and discuss your options. Please remember, never try to removed mold on your own, you’re doing more harm than good. Let SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale take care of this for you, it’s what we do.

Steps to Recovering after a Storm

5/30/2017 (Permalink)

Bad weather can spring up without much warning. Most of the time when a bad thunderstorm is threatening your area, you hardly have enough time to find shelter. As a homeowner, it is important to think about these moments before they occur.

Do you have the correct insurance policy? Is your home going to be covered in the event of a disaster? Is the amount of coverage going to be enough to restore your home? Thinking about these questions BEFORE the storm damage occurs can make your life after much easier.

Before you do anything else, stop and make sure your home is covered for the following:

Water and Windstorm Damage

Debris and Tree Removal

Sewer Backup Due to Flooding

Sump Pump Failure Due to Flooding

Additional Living Expenses in Case a Storm Forces You Out of Your Home

Once you have the proper home insurance coverage for storm damage, you can feel safer during the event of a tragedy. Seeing your home in ruins after a major storm can be heartbreaking. It can be difficult for families to know how to move on from this misfortune. The best thing you can do for your family and for your home is to begin storm damage recovery immediately. If you have suffered loss or damage because of bad weather, take the following steps on how to recover:

Take Pictures of the Damage

As soon as you are able, you need to start documenting the damage that has been done to your home. The trick to good storm damage recovery is keeping solid records of the damage. This includes noting any conversations that you have with your insurance agency and with the restoration company about the damage. You should be able to provide them with pictures and evidence of the destruction.

Make an Insurance Claim

It is crucial that you contact your home insurance agency immediately after your home suffers from storm damage. This is one of the biggest steps in storm damage recovery. Your homeowner’s insurance company should be able to provide you with support and structure for moving this process forward to restoring your home.

To start, you should find an exact copy of your homeowner’s insurance policy and determine if the damage exceeds your deductible. You will then need to work with your insurance company to get the necessary money and repairs completed. They will be able to refer you to local restoration companies, some may have preferred contractors that they will recommend, but the decision is ultimately yours as to who you chose to use. Once you have made your decision, report it back to your insurance company.

Finding a contractor that works directly with your insurance company is your best option, and it will save you time and hassle. Being the man in the middle of the two companies can be difficult. There are some contractors who make it their goal to work directly with your insurance company (SERVPRO is one of them) to improve communication during the project. This will take a lot of stress and pressure off you during this difficult time.

Make Temporary Repairs

Once all the proper claims have been made and the damage has been reported correctly, you can begin to make some temporary repairs. These repairs don’t have to be major reconstructions, and they don’t have to last your family forever. You can start by making your home livable again.

If you have suffered roof damage, place a tarp or plastic material over your roof to keep your home from being damaged further by additional rain. Begin the water mitigation process by having all the wet, destroyed materials removed and drying equipment put in place to prevent further damage from microbial growth. If you have lost a wall or large portion of your home, work on closing off that section of your house until you can do more permanent repairs.

Allow Your Family to Recover Slowly

Home repairs do not have to be completed all at one time. Storm damage can take several months to fully recover from and it is important to give your family the time that need. It might take a while before your home is fully restored to its former glory, but it is important that you take your time and get the job done correctly.

Call SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale if you find yourself victim of Mother Nature’s wrath. We are a preferred contractor for most insurance companies and we can work directly with any insurance company to take that stress off your hands, you have enough to worry about. Just give us a call at 248-246-0790 after your insurance claim has been made and we’ll handle the rest.

Fire Safety Tips for your Next Outdoor Party from SERVPRO!

5/26/2017 (Permalink)

With the warmer weather we’re having and summer just around the corner, outdoor parties in the backyard, or at the cottage are a delightful way to spend time with family and friends. However, safety should be your top priority when hosting any kind of party, especially when you’re using open flames for cooking, lighting or ambiance. Fire sources such as candles, portable outdoor fireplaces, sky lanterns, patio (tiki) torches, and fire pits can start a fire if they’re not used carefully. SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale wants you to enjoy your family and friends, as well as see you all be safe, so here are some practical tips to prevent fires during you next outdoor party:

  • If there are children and pets at the party, always supervise them and keep them at least 3 feet away from any flames.
  • If the scene is decorated with burning candles, use sturdy candle holders to help prevent candles from being tipped over.
  • More than half of all candle fires start when objects that can burn are too close to candles. Keep flammable objects far away from candles and any other open flame.
  • We strongly recommend using battery-operated flameless candles and patio torches instead of their more dangerous, open-flame counterparts.
  • When a portable fireplace is burning, be present at all times. Or designate another responsible adult to keep an eye on the fireplace.
  • Keep in mind that sky lanterns are prohibited by NFPA code requirements, so consider using something safer instead, such as kites or streamers.
  • If you’re going to make a campfire, build it in a fire pit to help prevent fire from spreading. Never leave the fire unattended, and keep a water source nearby.
  • If you’re grilling, keep the gill at least 10 feet away from any structure and don’t turn on the gas with the grill closed.

SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale hopes that you’ll keep these tips in mind during any outdoor party and pass them on to those who plan to host outdoor parties this summer. SERVPRO want you all to have a wonderful, safe summer. However, if you, or someone you know find yourself in need of any professional fire, water, storm, and mold restoration services, contact SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale office at 248-246-0790. We are here for you 24/7, 365!

Flood Insurance Vs. Sewer Backup Coverage, Are you covered??

5/18/2017 (Permalink)

Flood insurance and sewer backup insurance are not the same thing, nor are they included in your standard homeowner’s policy. It is important to understand the difference between the two, whether you have them, and if you need one or the other… or both!

Floods are the most devastating natural disaster in the US each year causing billions in losses and displacing thousands. While flooding is a common concern for those near rivers and streams, all homes in the US can be caught off-guard by floods. Floods are defined as surface water that enters your home for the outside. A flood can be caused by spring run-off, melting snow, an overflowing river, lake or stream, or even a swimming pool. Excessive groundwater buildup that enters your home via leaks or seepage is also considered flooding.

Sewer back-ups occur when massive volumes of water overload a drainage system. Once the waste water rises above your basement drains, it pushes up into your home through not just those floor drains but your sinks, tubs and any other drainage outlet. Sewer back-up can be a smelly, filthy mess and can introduce black mold, harmful bacteria, and sewage waste into your home, creating health risks and extensive damage.

Both these events can be caused by heavy rainfall, and if you don’t have the proper coverage. you will be footing the bill for this. It is important to know what coverages you have. Based on where you live, one of these may not be logically for you to carry. Here are some facts flood insurance you should consider:

  • All flood insurance policies are backed by the federal government, they set all rates.
  • Flood insurance never covers contents in a basement. It only covers the basement’s foundation and drywall, it does not cover carpeting, paneling, or tile.
  • Most flood insurance polices just cover the dwelling, in case the home is swept away in the flood.
  • You can purchase flood insurance for the contents in the main floor, but it will increase your premium.
  • Flood insurance will cover certain major appliances like furnaces, air conditioners, freezers, etc. but it will not cover stereos, televisions, furniture or other contents.
  • Enter your address into FloodSmart.gov’s One Step Flood Risk Profile tool and the site will tell you how likely it is that your property will be flooded
  • There’s a limit on government coverage. You can get upwards of $250,000 on the structure of your home, which in most parts of the U.S. is going to be enough.
  • Flood insurance involves water coming into your home from rain, a river, a lake, or external source of water. Flood insurance does not cover water sewer backup, even though this may be caused by excessive rain water.

Sewer back-up coverage can be added as an endorsement to your homeowner’s policy. This endorsement covers physical loss to property covered by your policy if the loss is caused by a discharge of water or waterborne material from a sewer, drain or sump. For a loss to be covered, the sewer, drain or sump must be located on premises listed in the endorsement. Here are some facts to consider:

  • Sewer back-ups are somewhat a common occurrence.
  • The cost can vary, but the typical sewer backup endorsement will cost under $100.
  • With sewer backup, you purchase specific amounts of coverage, i.e. $10,000; $15,000 or $20,000. This helps cover the cost of cleaning and mitigating the damage caused from the backup as well as replacing carpets, drywall, personal contents, even cleaning ducts.
  • There are some exclusions to the endorsement, one being floods, as well as poor maintenance, power failure, nor will it cover the cost of repairing the sewer or drain.
  • Metro Detroit residences should all carry sewer backup coverage, especially if they plan to finish their basement and keep a lot of stuff in there.

Understanding the difference between these two add-on coverage's in lieu of your homeowner’s policy is very important and can save you thousands of dollars if South Eastern Michigan experiences more of the epic rainfall that happened August 2014. If you have more questions or don’t know what coverage you do have, call your insurance agent and find out. Ask questions, be informed. SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale had a lot of customers that found themselves coming out of pockets $30,000+ to repair their homes after that storm, we don’t want this to happen to you.

High Pressure Washing Grease Spill Clean Up in Royal Oak, MI

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

Before and After photos of a food grease spill SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale cleaned up behind a local area restaurant

As we all know, we may never get a second chance to make a first impression.  As a restaurant. it is important to maintain a reputation of having a clean establishment, not only for the safety of your customers but also to attract new patrons. Restaurants are the sites of many grease and oil spills.

When a grease interceptor overflows or a large of cooking oil spills on your property, it is imperative to immediately take actions to prevent heavy fines, closure and / or accidents.  Grease spills can be very difficult to remove especially if not attended to immediately.  When grease spills or overflow, it is imperative to immediately form a barrier to control it from going any further that it needs to. Grease spills can quickly cover large areas, especially if cars drive through and track the grease. You may then be liable to have the underside of those cars cleaned as old food grease can really stink and the odor can linger for weeks.

Habitually, many will use water to wash down the spill but this can do more harm than good because it will only make the spill spread further than it needs to.  When washing down or pressure washing to clean up grease or oil spill it is important to have the proper tools such as a water recovery system to ensure that no water will go to city sewer lines. The fact that once the contamination pollutes the city lines, they have the right to close down the business and oblige the them to use only the city approved vendors to do the cleanup. City vendors will typically be more costly, in many cases more than double since they have all the licenses and endorsements such as hazmat, confined space, higher insurance coverage, etc. Therefore, it is very important that when you are victim of oil spill to be prepared by having the proper spill kit: absorbent, pressure washer, barriers, safety cones, and solutions.

Grease stains or spots can be very hazardous for the people driving and walking on them. Grease and oil stains are known can be very slippery especially when it rains or if in contact with water. It is essential that when there are build up of grease or oil to ensure that it is completely cleaned for the safety of the public. Failing to properly clean grease and oil build up can cause major accidents, which can lead to major lawsuits resulting in serious injuries to financial and social health of your business.

SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale can give you professional high pressure washing services to get out the grease or oil spillage at your business. Removal of hazardous matter in parking or trash enclosure is important because it will reduce the risk of accidents and heavy fines. Nine Fire Safety Tips

5/11/2017 (Permalink)

Fire safety should be a concern for everyone, young, old, big and small. Whether you live alone or have a family of six with your elderly parent living with you, it is important to make a fire plan and for everyone to know where fire detectors and extinguishers are placed in your home and maintaining a maintenance plan for them all. Here are nine very important fire safety tips that everyone should read. While SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale will be here to help if you find yourself in need after a fire, we’d much rather prefer that you keep your family and yourself safe with these helpful safety tips.

  1. Educate Your Kids

Kids have an awesome capacity for learning and understanding, so school them in fire safety. Children do really well with mnemonics and mantras and other tools to jog their memories in case of emergency. (For some specific tips, check out this article on fire prevention for kids or this comprehensive guide to Fire Safety for Kids.)

  1. Smoke Alarms & Fire Extinguishers

You should have at least one smoke alarm per level of your home, plus extras in every sleeping area and near the kitchen. You should also have at least one fire extinguisher in your home, and preferably one per floor. Check smoke alarm batteries & extinguisher pressure regularly, and change batteries at least twice a year. (Read more about smoke detector placement & maintenance.)

  1. Fire Sprinklers

Did you know you can get fire sprinklers installed in your home? I know, sounds fancy schmancy, but they’re actually quite affordable. In fact, once you factor in insurance discounts and increased property values, home fire sprinklers are actually a great investment in your family’s safety.

  1. Plan Your Escape

You may not want to think about it, but you do need to create an emergency escape plan in case of fire.

  1. Appliances & Electrical Safety

Nearly half of all house fires are attributed to faulty appliances, electronics, and electrical wiring. Practice proper electrical safety at home, including regular safety checks.

  1. In the Kitchen

Okay, the number one fire safety tip in the kitchen is never leave your cooking unattended! Even if it’s just a turkey roasting for hours in the oven, don’t leave the house. If you’re using the stovetop, take extra precautions and move flammable materials (napkins, oven mitts, etc.) to a safe distance.

  1. Smokers, Be Safe

If you smoke, you need to follow extra safety precautions. Keep lighters and matches out of reach of little hands. Always be sure to stub out your cigarettes thoroughly (or douse them in water). Never smoke near oxygen tanks, aerosol cans, or other flammable materials. Don’t smoke in bed.

  1. Lightning

I don’t know about you but for me, lightening is both awesome and terrifying. A lightning storm, especially at night, is absolutely gorgeous. But it’s also potentially dangerous, so remember to stay inside. Stay away from water (don’t even wash your hands). Don’t use electronics. And if you feel your hair stand on end, lightening is about to strike. Duck! (Not kidding.)

  1. Fire Protection Systems

Think of it like this: fire protection is to smoke alarms what a home security system is to DIY door sensors. In other words, a fire protection system links your smoke alarms to a security company, so they can monitor your home while you’re at work or on vacation, or can call the fire department in an emergency. Fire protection means someone else is looking out for your family, too.

Dealing with the aftermath of a fire can be awful and frustrating, SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale will do what we can do not only get your home clean, this also helps in getting your life back as well.

Mold Warning Signs: How to Tell if You Have a Mold Problem

Mold Warning Signs: How to Tell if You Have a Mold Problem

Find mold before it becomes a major problem

Discovering that you have mold within your home can cause you to feel many things. You might initially feel disgust, frustration or even a sense of being overwhelmed. Placing the home up for sale might be the first thing that pops into your mind, but that should be a last resort. Many people live in a home with mold and never realize it is there. They ignore the warning signs until the problem reaches a point where the mold is taking over and affecting their health.

Warning Signs of Mold:

Therefore, its important to be aware of what the signs are that you may be sharing your home with more than just your family. Signs that you may have mold include:

  • A strange odor: Mold has a pungent smell. When it is confined to one area of your home, you may notice an unpleasant odor when you are in that area. Mold can sometimes live within the walls or behind wallpaper, and so you might not immediately associate the smell with mold. If you do notice an unusual persistent odor in your home, the culprit may be mold.

  • The appearance of mold: In your shower stall or bathtub, its easy to distinguish normal soap scum from mold. However, in the basement or cellar you may have to investigate a little further to find the mold. Mold will take hold of damp areas, so if you have a wall or floor where dampness collects, mold could very well be there as well.

  • Health symptoms: Because mold is not always visible, it can be difficult realizing that you do indeed have a mold problem. If you feel listless, congested and experience watering eyes while in your home, these can all be signs of the presence of mold. It is not uncommon for a person who lives in a home that has mold to feel better while at work or out shopping. Their health problems begin the moment they step through their front door. Mold can often be the cause of this.

Do You Have a Mold Problem?

If you do think that you may have a mold problem, you’ll need to put on your investigator hat and get to work. Check all moist areas of your home first. If that doesn’t turn up any mold, consider calling in a professional.

Contact the Professionals!!

An indoor air quality hygienist (IAQH) is a professional who has been specially trained to detect mold in your home and perform the tests needed to determine they type of mold that are present and where the mold is present. These test results are then used by the mold remediation company. These professionals are trained to properly clean up mold and remove all tracing of it from your home as well as the air and HVAC system, if needed. There are many types of mold, there are toxic and non-toxic, some can be airborne, some areas in the home may have the mold present while others do not. Without this testing performed, you cannot know the type of mold id present or the proper procedures and chemicals to use to clean the mold. The IAQH should perform a posttest after the mold remediation has been completed to confirm that the mold has been removed from your home properly and that the mold levels are back to normal. It is highly recommended that the IAQH and the mold remediation company not be the same company, therefore assuring that you are getting honest results.

It can be difficult to stay in a home where the mold is causing an odor or is visible. You may feel very uncomfortable; however, for most people a small amount of mold will not cause serious health problems.

If you do suffer from allergies and find it is causing breathing problems, it might be wise to find a temporary place to stay until the mold problem is addressed.

Ignoring the warning signs that you may have mold only prolongs the problems you will experience. Be aggressive in locating the source of the mold and addressing it. After all, nothing is more important than your health.

The best way to tackle a mold problem is to call us here at SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale. We can point you in the right direction for testing, (or you can find your own and share the report that is no older than a week old). Once that has been done and report has been received, we will come out and complete a detailed estimate for you. After you approve the estimate or your insurance company does, we will take care of your mold problem in a quick but professional manner. With all the different types of mold, SERVPRO technicians are trained in mold remediation and have all the equipment and cleaning products needed to eliminate any form of mold found, including setting specialty equipment to remove mold from the air.

Call us today at 248-246-0790 to discuss your mold problem. We can recommend some reputable IAQH for testing that we require prior to quoting any mold remediation. We want to ensure that we can get your home back within a normal range, “Like it never even happened.”

Be Prepared for Winter Plumbing Problems - SERVPRO is Here to Help!!!

11/21/2016 (Permalink)

Plumbing problems can occur at any time, but during the winter months you’re more apt to experience ice cold showers, leakage, freezing pipes and flooding. One of the most severe problems that occurs this time of year is frozen or burst pipes, often with devastating results, e.g. flooding inside your home.

Be prepared for the emergencies with these helpful tips.

  • Insulate your plumbing pipes against freezing.
  • Keep the interior doors of your home all open. This helps heat circulate through your entire home.
  • If temperatures are expected to drop overnight, let the warm water drip, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall. Even a trickle of hot and cold water can prevent your pipes from freezing.
  • Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to uninsulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
  • If you’re going out of town during the cold winter months, before you leave set the thermostat in your home no lower than 55?F (12?C) and ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure it’s warm enough to prevent freezing.
  • Check with your insurance carrier or agent as to what types of coverage you have regarding flooding, pipes bursting, etc. as well as your limits and deductibles.

Here are some tips for dealing with plumbing emergencies:

  • If you have a frozen pipe, turn off the main water supply by using the stop valve. This valve is usually located under the kitchen sink or outside of your home. Make sure to protect everything around the frozen pipe to avoid damage if it bursts. In this situation, the pipe needs to be thawed. This should not be attempted on your own…  It is always best to contact a professional plumber to handle this situation. Your plumber is equipped with specialty equipment just for this situation and can address any additional problems which may occur.
  • FACT: When water freezes in a pipe it expands and can exert pressure over 2,000 pounds per square inch, enough pressure to rupture most any pipe filled with water, providing no place for the ice to expand.
  • A burst pipe can definitely be classified as an emergency, having the potential to cause serious damage to your home’s structure and electrical wiring. Keep the emergency number of a trusted plumber handy. When an emergency occurs you don’t have time to start searching for a plumber. (HINT: Check ahead of time about pricing, some plumbers may charge high hourly rates for emergency services.)
  • When dealing with a burst pipe, turn off the water supply at the main valve. This may be located under the kitchen sink or outside your home. Next, drain the system by turning on all your cold taps and flushing your toilets. Get a plumber out to your house as soon as possible to fix the damage. You next call should be to SERVPRO to handle any water damage and structural drying that is needed. You may also need to call your insurance and make an insurance claim, if the damage is extensive.

Remember plumbing problems can happen at any time but by being prepared you can prevent further damage to your home and save yourself an even bigger headache.

Why You Should Always Use a Certified Restoration Company for Water/Mold Damage

9/13/2016 (Permalink)

Water and mold damage should always be handled by a Certified Firm like SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale!

Bring in a certified firm like SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale as soon as possible to clean the home, dry it, and ensure there are no lingering health threats once the moisture is gone.

This is the only way to ensure a home is safe to live, and a business safe to work in; any other cleaning method is a dangerous gamble.

Metro Detroit Smoke and Soot Cleanup

6/23/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Oak Park/Ferndale will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Does Your Basement or Attic Have A Mold Problem?

6/21/2016 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.
